Continuous Versus Study-Test Recognition Procedures (Experiment 8a: Distinctive Non-word stimuli)In one of the most common procedures for studying recognition memory, subjects first study a set of items with instructions to remember them for a subsequent memory test and later are shown randomly intermixed studied and non-studied items one at a time and asked to make old/new recognition judgment for each one. We refer to this as the study-test or ST procedure. In a different approach, items are presented one at a time for old/new recognition judgments, with some items being re-presented after varying lags. This is called the continuous recognition, or CR procedure. We speculated that there may be interesting psychological differences between ST and CR, as intuitively the task demands of the two procedures seem to us quite different. In an ST procedure, during the study phase participants do something to encode items, and then they are distracted by some other activity for a while, and then they make recognition judgments about test probes. The participant’s goals and orientation ;20222022-02-04T06:00:58Z

NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19850020697: Electrical conductivity and phase diagram of binary alloys. 21: The system palladium-chromiumPd-Cr alloys were investigated by thermal analysis, hardness measurements, X-ray analysis, microscopic examination of etched pieces, and temperature-resistance curves of the solid alloys. Only one compound, Pd2Cr3, m, 1389 deg, is formed. It possesses a cubic face centered lattice and forms with excess Pd a series of solid solutions with a minimum m.p. at 45 atoms% Pd. Hardness maximum appears at the Pd2Cr3 point. Pd2Cr3 forms no solid solutions with Cr but eutectic point appears at 25 atoms% Pd, m. 1320 deg. The sp. resistance of pure Cr in an atom of H, indicates no allotropic forms. Cr2O3 is solid in molten Cr. Pure Cr melts at 1890 plus or minus 10 deg but Cr contg. Cr2O3 starts to melt at 1770 to 1790 deg.19852016-09-14T05:24:17Z

Free-Swinging Failure Tolerance for Robotic ManipulatorsUnder this GSRP fellowship, software-based failure-tolerance techniques were developed for robotic manipulators. The focus was on failures characterized by the loss of actuator torque at a joint, called free-swinging failures. The research results spanned many aspects of the free-swinging failure-tolerance problem, from preparing for an expected failure to discovery of postfailure capabilities to establishing efficient methods to realize those capabilities. Developed algorithms were verified using computer-based dynamic simulations, and these were further verified using hardware experiments at Johnson Space Center.19972011-05-23T23:25:34Z
Vapor Transport Within the Thermal Diffusion Cloud ChamberA review of the equations used to determine the 1-D vapor transport in the thermal diffusion cloud chamber (TDCC) is presented. These equations closely follow those of the classical Stefan tube problem in which there is transport of a volatile species through a noncondensible, carrier gas. In both cases, the very plausible assumption is made that the background gas is stagnant. Unfortunately, this assumption results in a convective flux which is inconsistent with the momentum and continuity equations for both systems. The approximation permits derivation of an analytical solution for the concentration profile in the Stefan tube, but there is no computational advantage in the case of the TDCC. Furthermore, the degree of supersaturation is a sensitive function of the concentration profile in the TD CC and the stagnant background gas approximation can make a dramatic difference in the calculated supersaturation. In this work, the equations typically used with a TDCC are compared with very;20002011-05-29T00:44:12Z
DTIC ADA519441: Measurement of gamma prime Precipitates in a Nickel-Based Superalloy using Energy-Filtered Transmission Electron Microscopy Coupled With Automated Segmenting Techniques (Preprint)Precipitates of the ordered L1(sub 2) gamma prime phase (dispersed in the face-centered cubic or FCC gamma matrix) were imaged in Rene 88 DT, a commercial multicomponent Ni-based superalloy, using energy filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM). Imaging was performed using the Cr, Co, Ni, Ti and Al elemental L-edges in the energy loss spectrum. Manual and automated segmentation procedures were utilized for identification of precipitate boundaries, measurement of precipitate sizes and overall area fractions. The automated region growing technique for precipitate identification in images was determined to accurately measure precipitate diameters. In addition, the region growing technique provided a repeatable method for optimizing segmentation techniques for varying EFTEM conditions.20102018-07-26T09:27:17Z
The circumstellar environments of intermediate mass main sequence starsAnalysis of archival Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) data resulted in identification of accreting gas toward a 2.8 Myr post-Herbig Be star in the R CrA star formation region, and identification of accreting gas toward HD 93563, previously identified as a classical Be star. Accreting gas was also detected toward two B(e) stars of previously controversial evolutionary state, resulting in identification of these systems as pre-Main Sequence Herbig Be stars viewed edge-on to their circumstellar disks. In parallel with this effort, accreting gas was detected toward the Herbig Ae star HR 5999, resulting in development of identification criteria for edge-on PMS proto-planetary disk systems. The work on individual stars is described.19932011-05-21T23:37:44Z
Ensuring correct rollback recovery in distributed shared memory systemsDistributed shared memory (DSM) implemented on a cluster of workstations is an increasingly attractive platform for executing parallel scientific applications. Checkpointing and rollback techniques can be used in such a system to allow the computation to progress in spite of the temporary failure of one or more processing nodes. This paper presents the design of an independent checkpointing method for DSM that takes advantage of DSM's specific properties to reduce error-free and rollback overhead. The scheme reduces the dependencies that need to be considered for correct rollback to those resulting from transfers of pages. Furthermore, in-transit messages can be recovered without the use of logging. We extend the scheme to a DSM implementation using lazy release consistency, where the frequency of dependencies is further reduced.19952011-05-23T02:48:53Z

ERIC ED400642: Longitudinal Research on Children Who Received Early Childhood Special Education Services: The State Education Agency Perspective. Final Report. In order to help formulate the research questions for a future study on the long-term outcomes of students with disabilities, this study collected information from eight states concerning their priorities for longitudinal research on students who received special education services under the age of 5 years. State directors of special education in the eight states were asked to rank nine proposed areas of research, including: (1) rate of retention; (2) home language and economic situation; (3) changes in disability classification over time, including de-classification; (4) rates of suspension and expulsion; (5) rate of graduation; (6) postsecondary status; (7) family satisfaction with preschool services/special education support; (8) mobility rate; and (9) provision of English as a second language services during elementary and secondary years. The high school graduation rate of students who received special education services under the age of 5 was the long-term outcome of most interes;19962015-12-18T20:54:46Z

Magnetic stress as a driving force of structural distortions: the case of CrNWe show that the observed transition from rocksalt to orthorhombic P$_{nma}$ symmetry in CrN can be understood in terms of stress anisotropy. Using local spin density functional theory, we find that the imbalance between stress stored in spin-paired and spin-unpaired Cr nearest neighbors causes the rocksalt structure to be unstable against distortions and justifies the observed antiferromagnetic ordering. This stress has a purely magnetic origin, and may be important in any system where the coupling between spin ordering and structure is strong.20002013-09-22T19:18:52Z
