| DTIC ADA116128: Evaluation of Seismic Event Location Methods on the Regional Event Location System (RELS). | Several location methods developed at SDAC are evaluated by comparing location errors of these methods against errors computed with the standard method. The new methods include: Using P travel times in laterally heterogeneous media: A station travel time residual correlation matrix in the normal equations; Location with simultaneous determination of Pn, Pg, and Lg velocities; Combination of the correlation matrix method and the simultaneous determination method. All the methods evaluated in this report appear to give smaller absolute epicenter and depth errors than the standard method of locating events. Furthermore, these methods do not use station corrections; therefore the locations obtained are not station- or region-dependent. They can be used to locate seismic events in any source region, with any set of stations. We present an algorithm which transforms a given combinational circuit into a functionally equivalent pipelined circuit with minimum latency and clock-period no greater than a given upper bound c. The algorithm runs in O(E) steps, where E is the number of interconnections in the circuit, and is optimal within a constant factor. We give a novel and concise characterization of the minimum clock-period of a circuit in terms of the maximum delay-to-register ratio cycle in the circuit. We show that this ration does not exceed the minimum feasible clock-period by more than the maximum delay D of the elements in the circuit. This characterization leads to an O(E lg D) algorithm for minimum clock-period pipelining of combinational circuitry with latency no greater than a given upper bound. This phase consisted of the systematic compilation of a bibliography of works in the Hindi and Urdu languages concerned with the premodern history of Islamic domination of the Indian subcontinent. The purpose of this research was to list previously obscure or unknown monographic and periodical literature. In order to obtain this information, during the period from July 1973 to May 1974, the periodical and monographic holdings of a large number of libraries in North India were examined and the bibliographic data recorded. | Benford Behavior of Generalized Zeckendorf Decompositions | We prove connections between Zeckendorf decompositions and Benford's law. Recall that if we define the Fibonacci numbers by $F_1 = 1, F_2 = 2$ and $F_{n+1} = F_n + F_{n-1}$, every positive integer can be written uniquely as a sum of non-adjacent elements of this sequence; this is called the Zeckendorf decomposition, and similar unique decompositions exist for sequences arising from recurrence relations of the form $G_{n+1}=c_1G_n+\cdots+c_LG_{n+1-L}$ with $c_i$ positive and some other restrictions. Additionally, a set $S \subset \mathbb{Z}$ is said to satisfy Benford's law base 10 if the density of the elements in $S$ with leading digit $d$ is $\log_{10}{(1+\frac{1}{d})}$; in other words, smaller leading digits are more likely to occur. We prove that as $n\to\infty$ for a randomly selected integer $m$ in $[0, G_{n+1})$ the distribution of the leading digits of the summands in its generalized Zeckendorf decomposition converges to Benford's law almost surely.
