| Anomaly of the non-ergodicity parameter and crossover to white noise in the fast relaxation spectrum of a simple glass former | We present quasi-elastic light scattering (LS) and dielectric (DS) spectra of the glass former alpha-picoline (13K < T < 320K). At high temperatures the evolution of the susceptibility minimum is well described by mode coupling theory (MCT) yielding a critical temperature T_c = 162K +- 5K. At T_c > T > T_g the excess wing of the alpha-process identified in the DS spectra and characterized by a power-law exponent c is rediscovered in the LS spectra. Introducing a universal evolution for c = c[lg(tau_{alpha})] as suggested by DS data of several glass formers, the fast dynamics spectrum is singled out, allowing to determine the non-ergodicity parameter f(T). The latter shows the predicted cusp-like anomaly identifying T_c as well. Another discontinuous change of f(T) is observed at T_g. The fast dynamics spectra exhibit a crossover to ``white noise'' (T < T_c). Abstract Background: Core promoters are cis-regulatory modules to which bind the basal transcriptional machinery and which participate in the regulation of transcription initiation. Although core promoters have not been extensively investigated through functional assays in a chromosomal context, the available data suggested that the response of a given core promoter might vary depending on the promoter context. Previous studies suggest that a (-57/+40) fragment constitutes the core promoter of the BhC4-1 gene which is located in DNA puff C4 of the sciarid fly Bradysia hygida. Here we tested this (-57/+40) fragment in distinct regulatory contexts in order to verify if promoter context affects its core promoter activity. | Tagging French Without Lexical Probabilities -- Combining Linguistic Knowledge And Statistical Learning | This paper explores morpho-syntactic ambiguities for French to develop a strategy for part-of-speech disambiguation that a) reflects the complexity of French as an inflected language, b) optimizes the estimation of probabilities, c) allows the user flexibility in choosing a tagset. The problem in extracting lexical probabilities from a limited training corpus is that the statistical model may not necessarily represent the use of a particular word in a particular context. In a highly morphologically inflected language, this argument is particularly serious since a word can be tagged with a large number of parts of speech. Due to the lack of sufficient training data, we argue against estimating lexical probabilities to disambiguate parts of speech in unrestricted texts. Instead, we use the strength of contextual probabilities along with a feature we call ``genotype'', a set of tags associated with a word.
