| Tagging French Without Lexical Probabilities -- Combining Linguistic Knowledge And Statistical Learning | This paper explores morpho-syntactic ambiguities for French to develop a strategy for part-of-speech disambiguation that a) reflects the complexity of French as an inflected language, b) optimizes the estimation of probabilities, c) allows the user flexibility in choosing a tagset. The problem in extracting lexical probabilities from a limited training corpus is that the statistical model may not necessarily represent the use of a particular word in a particular context. In a highly morphologically inflected language, this argument is particularly serious since a word can be tagged with a large number of parts of speech. Due to the lack of sufficient training data, we argue against estimating lexical probabilities to disambiguate parts of speech in unrestricted texts. | The Recent Star Formation Histories of M81 Group Dwarf Irregular Galaxies | We present observations and analysis of nine dwarf irregular galaxies (dIs) in the M81 Group taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The nine galaxy sample (the Garland, M81 Dwarf A, DDO 53, Ho IX, Ho I, DDO 165, NGC 2366, Ho II, and IC 2574) spans 6 magnitudes in luminosity, a factor of 1000 in current star formation rate, and 0.5 dex in metallicity. Here we use color-magnitude diagrams of resolved stellar populations to study the star formation histories (SFHs) of these galaxies. We divide the sample into faint and bright galaxies, with a dividing line of M_${B}$ = -15, and then analyze the similarities and differences in the SFHs, birthrate parameters, fraction of stars formed per time interval, and spatial distribution of stellar components. Comparing these parameters as a function of luminosity, we find only minor differences in SF characteristics. | A Satisfiability Algorithm for AC$^0$ | We consider the problem of efficiently enumerating the satisfying assignments to $\AC^0$ circuits. We give a zero-error randomized algorithm which takes an $\AC^0$ circuit as input and constructs a set of restrictions which partition $\{0,1\}^n$ so that under each restriction the value of the circuit is constant. Let $d$ denote the depth of the circuit and $cn$ denote the number of gates. This algorithm runs in time $|C| 2^{n(1-\mu_{c.d})}$ where $|C|$ is the size of the circuit for $\mu_{c,d} \ge 1/\bigO[\lg c + d \lg d]^{d-1}$ with probability at least $1-2^{-n}$. As a result, we get improved exponential time algorithms for $\AC^0$ circuit satisfiability and for counting solutions. In addition, we get an improved bound on the correlation of $\AC^0$ circuits with parity.
