| Spectral Transformation Algorithms for Computing Unstable Modes of Large Scale Power Systems | In this paper we describe spectral transformation algorithms for the computation of eigenvalues with positive real part of sparse nonsymmetric matrix pencils $(J,L)$, where $L$ is of the form $\pmatrix{M&0\cr 0&0}$. For this we define a different extension of M\"obius transforms to pencils that inhibits the effect on iterations of the spurious eigenvalue at infinity. These algorithms use a technique of preconditioning the initial vectors by M\"obius transforms which together with shift-invert iterations accelerate the convergence to the desired eigenvalues. Also, we see that M\"obius transforms can be successfully used in inhibiting the convergence to a known eigenvalue. Moreover, the procedure has a computational cost similar to power or shift-invert iterations with M\"obius transforms: neither is more expensive than the usual shift-invert iterations with pencils. Results from tests with a concrete transient stability model of an interconnected power system whose Jacobian matrix has o; | 2010 | 2013-09-23T13:47:24Z |

| New alphabet-dependent morphological transition in a random RNA alignment | We study the fraction $f$ of nucleotides involved in the formation of a cactus--like secondary structure of random heteropolymer RNA--like molecules. In the low--temperature limit we study this fraction as a function of the number $c$ of different nucleotide species. We show, that with changing $c$, the secondary structures of random RNAs undergo a morphological transition: $f(c)\to 1$ for $c \le c_{\rm cr}$ as the chain length $n$ goes to infinity, signaling the formation of a virtually "perfect" gapless secondary structure; while $f(c) c_{\rm cr}$, what means that a non-perfect structure with gaps is formed. The strict upper and lower bounds $2 \le c_{\rm cr} \le 4$ are proven, and the numerical evidence for $c_{\rm cr}$ is presented. The relevance of the transition from the evolutional point of view is discussed. | 2012 | 2013-09-23T05:47:15Z |
| Kohn-Rossi Cohomology and its application to the Complex Plateau Problem III | Let $X$ be a compact connected strongly pseudoconvex $CR$ manifold of real dimension 2n-1 in $\mathbb{C}^{N}$. It has been an interesting question to find an intrinsic smoothness criteria for the complex Plateau problem. For $n\ge 3$ and $N=n+1$, Yau found a necessary and sufficient condition for the interior regularity of the Harvey-Lawson solution to the complex Plateau problem by means of Kohn-Rossi cohomology groups on $X$ in 1981. For n=2 and $N\ge n+1$, the problem has been open for over 30 years. In this paper we introduce a new CR invariant $g^{(1,1)}(X)$ of $X$. The vanishing of this invariant will give the interior regularity of the Harvey-Lawson solution up to normalization. In case $n=2$ and N=3, the vanishing of this invariant is enough to give the interior regularity. | 2012 | 2013-07-20T07:16:26Z |

| C, N, O abundances and carbon isotope ratios in evolved stars of the open clusters Collinder 261 and NGC 6253 | Context. Investigations of abundances of carbon and nitrogen in the atmospheres of evolved stars of open clusters may provide comprehensive information on chemical composition changes caused by stellar evolution. Aims. Our main aim is to increase the number of open clusters with determined carbon-to nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios. Methods. High-resolution spectra were analysed using a differential model atmosphere method. Abundances of carbon were derived using the C_2 Swan (0,1) band head at 5635.5 {\AA} (FEROS spectra) and the C_2 Swan (1,0) band head at 4737 {\AA} (UVES spectra). The wavelength interval 7980-8130 {\AA}, with strong CN features was analysed to determine nitrogen abundances and 12^C/13^C isotope ratios. The oxygen abundances were determined from the [Oi] line at 6300 {\AA}. Results. The average value of 12^C/13^C isotope ratios of Cr 261 is equal to 18 \pm 2 in four giants and to 12 \pm 1 in two clump stars; it is equal to 16 \pm 1 in four clump stars of the open ; | 2012 | 2013-07-20T07:01:24Z |
| Magnetic excitations of the gapped quantum spin dimer antiferromagnet Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ | Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ consist of a lattice of spin-1/2 Cr$^{5+}$ ions, which form hexagonal bilayers and which are paired into dimers by the dominant antiferromagnetic intrabilayer coupling. The dimers are coupled three-dimensionally by frustrated interdimer interactions. A structural distortion from hexagonal to monoclinic leads to orbital order and lifts the frustration giving rise to spatially anisotropic exchange interactions. We have grown large single crystals of Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and have performed DC susceptibility, high field magnetisation and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The neutron scattering experiments reveal three gapped and dispersive singlet to triplet modes arising from the three twinned domains that form below the transition thus confirming the picture of orbital ordering. The exchange interactions are extracted by comparing the data to a Random Phase Approximation model and the dimer coupling is found to be $J_{0}=5.55$ meV, while the ratio of i; | 2009 | 2013-09-19T22:47:29Z |
| Bose-Einstein condensation theory for any integer spin: approach based in noncommutative quantum mechanics | A Bose-Einstein condensation theory for any integer spin using noncommutative quantum mechanics methods is considered. The effective potential is derived as a multipolar expansion in the non-commutativity parameter ($\theta$) and, at second order in $\theta$, our procedure yields to the standard dipole-dipole interaction with $\theta^2$ playing the role of the strength interaction parameter. The generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation containing non-local dipolar contributions is found. For $^{52}$Cr isotopes $\theta = C_{dd}/4\pi$ becomes $\sim 10^{-11}$ cm and, thus for this value of $\theta$ one cannot distinguish interactions coming from non-commutativity or those of dynamical origin. | 2009 | 2013-09-17T23:34:27Z |

| Spectroscopic and Photometric evidence of two stellar populations in the Galactic Globular Cluster NGC6121 (M4) | AIMS. We present abundance analysis based on high resolution spectra of 105 isolated red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic Globular Cluster NGC 6121 (M4). Our aim is to study its star population in the context of the multi-population phenomenon recently discovered to affect some Globular Clusters. METHODS. The data have been collected with FLAMES+UVES, at the ESO/VLT@UT2 telescope. Analysis was performed under LTE approximation for the following elements: O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Ba, and NLTE corrections were applied to Na and Mg. Spectroscopic data were coupled with high-precision wide-field UBVI$_{\rm C}$ photometry from WFI@2.2m telescope and infrared JHK photometry from 2MASS. RESULTS: We derived an average $\rm {[Fe/H]}=-1.07\pm0.01$ (internal error), and an $\alpha$ enhancement of $\rm {[\alpha/Fe]}=+0.39\pm0.05$ dex (internal error). We confirm the presence of an extended Na-O anticorrelation, and find two distinct groups of stars with significantly differen; | 2008 | 2013-09-21T07:40:51Z |

| Evidence for nodal superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ | The recent discovery of superconductivity in the quasi-one-dimensional compound K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$, which consists of double-walled tubes of [(Cr$_3$As$_3$)$^{2-}]^\infty$ that run along the c axis, has attracted immediate attention as a potential system for studying superconductors with reduced dimensionality. Here we report clear experimental evidence for the unconventional nature of the superconducting order parameter in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$, by precisely measuring the temperature dependence of the change in the penetration depth $\Delta\lambda(T)$ using a tunnel diode oscillator. Linear behavior of $\Delta\lambda(T)$ is observed for $T\ll T_c$, instead of the exponential behavior of conventional superconductors, indicating that there are line nodes in the superconducting gap. This is strong evidence for unconventional behavior and may provide key information for identifying the pairing state of this novel superconductor. | 2015 | 2018-06-26T00:04:59Z |
