The effects of adding different kinds of contextual information on the Swiss public’s perception of earthquake likelihoodsA single likelihood is very difficult to evaluate without context or experience. One tool that risk communicators suggest for aiding with comprehension of unfamiliar risks such as damaging earthquakes is the use of comparator risks. Comparisons are thought to put risks in psychological perspective by providing a kind of “conceptual yardstick” [1]. This is thought to improve understanding of risk magnitudes and be more intuitively meaningful than absolute numerical probabilities by allowing less familiar risks to be compared with those that are better known [2–5]. Freeman et al [6] found that comparator risks in and of themselves were helpful to people when trying to understand their personal risk from COVID-19, as it increased the sensitivity of their perception of different levels of risk, as did Savadori et al [7] when studying seismic risk communication. A graphical aid called a risk ladder, which shows the positions of comparator risks along a visual scale, is also often used;20222022-08-09T11:40:45Z
SUPER SODIUM Rocket EngineAnother successful 6lb rocket. Super Sodium propellant: 54% K perchlorate – KClO₄ 10% Strontium perchlorate (anhydrous) – Sr(ClO₄)₂ 5% Lithium nitrate (anhydrous) – LiNO₃ 30% Na Benzoate – C₇H₅NaO₂ 1% Copper Chromite – Cu₂Cr₂O₅ +3.5% Trimethylbenzoindolenine – C₁₅H₁₅N (phlegmatizer) This formula was created to showcase the power of Sodium benzoate in combination with certain oxidizers. The overall effect is a red-tailed rocket with a very high specific impulse. Once the fuel caught, she was GONE. Strontium cations and Lithium ions emit wavelengths of energy on the red side of the visible light spectrum, thus we see red light. Sodium yellow, Barium and Boron green, Copper blue, etc… Same fuel above the spindle. It howled nicely through the sky, before the nosecone display charge went bang. N1 (Glitter) stars where used to provide the report effect. These are made from: 51% Potassium nitrate 15% Sulfur 10% Charcoal (airfloat) 8% Aluminium ( -325 ;20202023-08-31T10:24:06Z

NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20170000388: Streamlining the Design Tradespace for Earth Imaging ConstellationsSatellite constellations and Distributed Spacecraft Mission (DSM) architectures offer unique benefits to Earth observation scientists and unique challenges to cost estimators. The Cost and Risk (CR) module of the Tradespace Analysis Tool for Constellations (TAT-C) being developed by NASA Goddard seeks to address some of these challenges by providing a new approach to cost modeling, which aggregates existing Cost Estimating Relationships (CER) from respected sources, cost estimating best practices, and data from existing and proposed satellite designs. Cost estimation through this tool is approached from two perspectives: parametric cost estimating relationships and analogous cost estimation techniques. The dual approach utilized within the TAT-C CR module is intended to address prevailing concerns regarding early design stage cost estimates, and offer increased transparency and fidelity by offering two preliminary perspectives on mission cost. This work outlines the existing cost model;20162021-02-06T00:40:47Z

NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20140017375: The Virtual Observatory Service TheoSSA: Establishing a Database of Synthetic Stellar Flux Standards II. NLTE Spectral Analysis of the OB-Type Subdwarf Feige 110Context. In the framework of the Virtual Observatory (VO), the German Astrophysical VO (GAVO) developed the registered service TheoSSA (Theoretical Stellar Spectra Access). It provides easy access to stellar spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and is intended to ingest SEDs calculated by any model-atmosphere code, generally for all effective temperatures, surface gravities, and elemental compositions. We will establish a database of SEDs of flux standards that are easily accessible via TheoSSA's web interface. Aims. The OB-type subdwarf Feige 110 is a standard star for flux calibration. State-of-the-art non-local thermodynamic equilibrium stellar-atmosphere models that consider opacities of species up to trans-iron elements will be used to provide a reliable synthetic spectrum to compare with observations. Methods. In case of Feige 110, we demonstrate that the model reproduces not only its overall continuum shape from the far-ultraviolet (FUV) to the optical wavelength range but also ;20142016-11-16T20:53:05Z
NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20130014351: Extraterrestrial Amino Acids Identified in Metal-Rich CH and CB Carbonaceous Chondrites from AntarcticaCarbonaceous chondrites contain numerous indigenous organic compounds and could have been an important source of prebiotic compounds required for the origin of life on Earth or elsewhere. Extraterrestrial amino acids have been reported in five of the eight groups of carbonaceous chondrites and are most abundant in CI, CM, and CR chondritesbut are also present in the more thermally altered CV and CO chondrites. We report the abundance, distribution, and enantiomeric and isotopic compositions of simple primary amino acids in six metal-rich CH and CB carbonaceous chondrites that have not previously been investigated for amino acids: Allan Hills (ALH) 85085 (CH3), Pecora Escarpment(PCA) 91467 (CH3), Patuxent Range (PAT) 91546 (CH3), MacAlpine Hills (MAC) 02675(CBb), Miller Range (MIL) 05082 (CB), and Miller Range (MIL) 07411 (CB). Anomalous Magnetoresistance in Fibonacci MultilayersThe present paper theoretically investigates magnetoresistance curves in quasiperiodic magnetic multilayers for two different growth directions, namely [110] and [100]. We considered identical ferromagnetic layers separated by non-magnetic layers with two different thicknesses chosen based on the Fibonacci sequence. Using parameters for Fe/Cr multilayers, four terms were included in our description of the magnetic energy: Zeeman, cubic anisotropy, bilinear and biquadratic couplings. The minimum energy was determined by the gradient method and the equilibrium magnetization directions found were used to calculate magnetoresistance curves. By choosing spacers with a thickness such that biquadratic coupling is stronger than bilinear coupling, unusual behaviors for the magnetoresistance were observed: (i) for the [110] case there is a different behavior for structures based on even and odd Fibonacci generations; and more interesting, (ii) for the [100] case we found magnetic field ranges fo;20122013-09-21T20:37:29Z

An Application of Macaulay's Estimate to CR GeometrySeveral questions in CR geometry lead naturally to the study of bihomogeneous polynomials $r(z,\bar{z})$ on $\C^n \times \C^n$ for which $r(z,\bar{z})\norm{z}^{2d}=\norm{h(z)}^2$ for some natural number $d$ and a holomorphic polynomial mapping $h=(h_1,..., h_K)$ from $\C^n$ to $\C^K$. When $r$ has this property for some $d$, one seeks relationships between $d$, $K$, and the signature and rank of the coefficient matrix of $r$. In this paper, we reformulate this basic question as a question about the growth of the Hilbert function of a homogeneous ideal in $\C[z_1,...,z_n]$ and apply a well-known result of Macaulay to estimate some natural quantities.20132013-07-20T09:19:01Z
Quantized Anomalous Hall Effect in Magnetic Topological InsulatorsThe Hall effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the spin Hall effect are fundamental transport processes in solids arising from the Lorentz force and the spin-orbit coupling respectively. The quantum versions of the Hall effect and the spin Hall effect have been discovered in recent years. However, the quantized anomalous Hall (QAH) effect has not yet been realized experimentally. In a QAH insulator, spontaneous magnetic moments and spin-orbit coupling combine to give rise to a topologically non-trivial electronic structure, leading to the quantized Hall effect without any external magnetic field. In this work, based on state-of-art first principles calculations, we predict that the tetradymite semiconductors Bi$_2$Te$_3$, Bi$_2$Se$_3$, and Sb$_2$Te$_3$ form magnetically ordered insulators when doped with transition metal elements (Cr or Fe), in sharp contrast to conventional dilute magnetic semiconductor where free carriers are necessary to mediate the magnetic coupling.
