Understanding ferromagnetism in Cr-based 3d-5d double perovskitesFerromagnetism in Cr-based double perovskites is analyzed using effective model as well as simulation approach. Starting from a microscopic model proposed recently for this class of double perovskites, an effective spin-only model is derived in the limit of large exchange coupling at the B-site. Analytic expressions for the resultant exchange coupling is derived in certain limiting cases. The behaviour of this exchange is used to provide a plausible explanation for the enhanced ferromagnetic tendency as also the enigmatic increase in Curie temperature observed in Cr-based DP-s, in the series Sr$_{2}$CrWO$_{6}$,Sr$_{2}$CrReO$_{6}$ to Sr$_{2}$CrOsO$_{6}$. The superexchange between neighbouring B and B' sites is found to play a crucial role both in stabilizing ferromagnetism, especially in the latter two compounds, as well as increasing the T$_{c}$.20122013-09-23T07:57:07Z

Canonical Cartan connection for $4$-dimensional CR-manifolds belonging to general class ${\sf II}$We study the equivalence problem for $4$-dimensional CR-manifolds of CR-dimension $1$ and codimension $2$ which are referred to as Engel CR-manifolds. We construct a canonical Cartan connection on such CR-manifolds through Cartan equivalence's method. In particular, we give the explicit expression of $4$ biholomorphic invariants, the annulation of which is a necessary and sufficient condition for an Engel manifold to be locally biholomorphic to Beloshapka's cubic in $\mathbb{C}^3$.20142018-06-30T03:57:17Z
Magnetic structure and orbital ordering in KCrF3 perovskiteKCrF3 represents another prototypical orbital-ordered perovskite, where Cr2+ possesses the same electronic configuration of 3d4 as that of strongly Jahn-Teller distorted Mn3+ in many CMR manganites. The crystal and magnetic structures of KCrF3 compound are investigated by using polarized and unpolarized neutron powder diffraction methods. The results show that the KCrF3 compound crystallizes in tetragonal structure at room temperature and undergoes a monoclinic distortion with the decrease in temperature. The distortion of the crystal structure indicates the presence of cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion which is driven by orbital ordering. With decreasing temperature, four magnetic phase transitions are observed at 79.5, 45.8, 9.5, and 3.2 K, which suggests a rich magnetic phase diagram. Below T_N = 79.5 K, the Cr2+ moment orders in an incommensurate antiferromagnetic arrangement, which can be defined by the magnetic propagation vector (1/2$\pm\,$$\delta\,$, 1/2$\pm\,$$\delta\,$, 0). ;20102013-09-19T10:04:36Z
Dependence of a planet's chaotic zone on particle eccentricity: the shape of debris disc inner edgesThe orbit of a planet is surrounded by a chaotic zone wherein nearby particles' orbits are chaotic and unstable. Wisdom (1980) showed that the chaos is driven by the overlap of mean motion resonances which occurs within a distance (da/a)_chaos = 1.3 mu^2/7 of the planet's orbit. However, the width of mean motion resonances grows with the particles' eccentricity, which will increase the width of the chaotic zone at higher eccentricities. Here we investigate the width of the chaotic zone using the iterated encounter map and N-body integrations. We find that the classical prescription works well for particles on low-eccentricity orbits. However, above a critical eccentricity, dependent upon the mass of the planet, the width of the chaotic zone increases with eccentricity. An extension of Wisdom's analytical arguments then shows that, above the critical eccentricity, the chaotic zone width is given by (da/a)_chaos = 1.8 e^1/5 mu^1/5, which agrees well with the encounter map results.
