Propagation of secondary antiprotons and cosmic rays in the GalaxyRecent measurements of the cosmic ray (CR) antiproton flux have been shown to challenge existing CR propagation models. It was shown that the reacceleration models designed to match secondary to primary nuclei ratios (e.g., B/C) produce too few antiprotons. In the present paper we discuss one possibility to overcome these difficulties. Using the measured antiproton flux AND B/C ratio to fix the diffusion coefficient, we show that the spectra of primary nuclei as measured in the heliosphere may contain a fresh local "unprocessed" component at low energies perhaps associated with the Local Bubble, thus decreasing the measured secondary to primary nuclei ratio. The independent evidence for SN activity in the solar vicinity in the last few Myr supports this idea. The model reproduces antiprotons, B/C ratio, and elemental abundances up to Ni (Z20032013-09-20T16:02:31Z

The population of deformed bands in $^{48}$Cr by emission of $^{8}$Be from the $^{32}$S + $^{24}$Mg reactionUsing particle-$\gamma$ coincidences we have studied the population of final states after the emission of 2 $\alpha$-particles and of $^{8}$Be in nuclei formed in $^{32}$S+$^{24}$Mg reactions at an energy of $\textrm{E}_{\rm L}(^{32}\textrm{S}) = 130 {\rm MeV}$. The data were obtained in a setup consisting of the GASP $\gamma$-ray detection array and the multidetector array ISIS. Particle identification is obtained from the $\Delta$E and E signals of the ISIS silicon detector telescopes, the $^{8}$Be being identified by the instantaneous pile up of the $\Delta$E and E pulses. $\gamma$-ray decays of the $^{48}$Cr nucleus are identified with coincidences set on 2 $\alpha$-particles and on $^{8}$Be. Some transitions of the side-band with $K^\pi=4^{-}$ show stronger population for $^{8}$Be emission relative to that of 2 $\alpha$-particles (by a factor $1.5-1.8$). This observation is interpreted as due to an enhanced emission of $^{8}$Be into a more deformed nucleus. Calculations based on t;20012013-09-24T01:21:35Z

NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20020051091: A IAB-Complex Iron Meteorite Containing Low-Ca Clinopyroxene: Northwest Africa 468 and its Relationship to Iodranites and Formation by Impact MeltingNorthwest Africa 468 (NWA 468) is a new ungrouped, silicate-rich member of the IAB complex of nonmagmatic iron meteorites. The silicates contain relatively coarse (approximately 300 micron-size) grains of low-Ca clinopyroxene with polysynthetic twinning and inclined extinction. Low-Ca clinopyroxene is indicative of quenching from high temperatures (either from protoenstatite in a few seconds or high-temperature clinoenstatite in a few hours). It seems likely that NWA 468 formed by impact melting followed by rapid cooling to less than or equal to 660 C. After the loss of a metal-sulfide melt from the silicates, sulfide was reintroduced, either from impact-mobilized FeS or as an S2 vapor that combined with metallic Fe to produce FeS. The O-isotopic composition (delta O-17 = -1.39 %) indicates that the precursor material of NWA 468 was a metal-rich (e.g., CR) carbonaceous chondrite. Lodranites are similar in bulk chemical and O-isotopic composition to the silicates in NWA 468; the MAC 881;20022016-10-19T20:59:40Z
NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19770004401: The eigenvalue spectrum of the Orr-Sommerfeld problemA numerical investigation of the temporal eigenvalue spectrum of the ORR-Sommerfeld equation is presented. Two flow profiles are studied, the plane Poiseuille flow profile and the Blasius boundary layer (parallel): flow profile. In both cases a portion of the complex c-plane bounded by 0 less than or equal to CR sub r 1 and -1 less than or equal to ci sub i 0 is searched and the eigenvalues within it are identified. The spectra for the plane Poiseuille flow at alpha = 1.0 and R = 100, 1000, 6000, and 10000 are determined and compared with existing results where possible. The spectrum for the Blasius boundary layer flow at alpha = 0.308 and R = 998 was found to be infinite and discrete. Other spectra for the Blasius boundary layer at various Reynolds numbers seem to confirm this result. The eigenmodes belonging to these spectra were located and discussed.19762016-07-20T21:26:54Z
NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19780004994: The effect of temperature and pressure on the distribution of iron group elements between metal and olivine phases in the process of differentiation of protoplanetary materialThe distribution patterns of Ni, Co, Mn, and Cr were studied in olivines of various origins: from meteorites (chondrites, achondrites, pallasites), which are likely analogs of the protoplanetary material, to peridotite inclusions in kimberlite pipes, which are analogs of mantle material. According to X-ray microanalysis data, nickel is concentrated in peridotite olivines, while manganese is concentrated in meteoritic olivines. The maximum chromium content was found in ureilites, which were formed under reducing conditions. Experiments at pressures of 20 to 70 kbar and temperatures of 1100 to 2000 C have shown that in a mixture of olivine and Ni metal or NiO, nickel enters the silicate phase, displacing Fe into the metallic phase. Equilibrium temperatures were estimated from the Fe, Ni distribution coefficients between the metal and olivine: 1500 K for pallasites, 1600 K for olivine-bronzite H6 chondrites, 1200 K for olivine-hypersthene L6, 900 K for LL6, and 1900 K for ureilites (at P ;19772016-07-28T10:54:34Z
NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19950018017: Au/Cr Sputter Coating for the Protection of Alumina During Sliding at High TemperaturesA sputter deposited bilayer coating of gold and chromium was investigated as a potential solid lubricant to protect alumina substrates in applications involving sliding at high temperature. The proposed lubricant was tested in a pin-on-disk tribometer with coated alumina disks sliding against uncoated alumina pins. Three test parameters; temperature, load, and sliding velocity were varied over a wide range in order to determine the performance envelope on the gold/chromium (Au/Cr) solid lubricant film. The tribo-tests were run in an air atmosphere at temperatures of 25 to 1000 C, under loads of 4.9 to 49.0 N and at sliding velocities from 1 to 15 m/sec. Post test analyses included surface profilometry, wear factor determination and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) examination of worn surfaces. Compared to unlubricated Al2O3 sliding, the use of the Au/Cr film reduced friction by 30 to 50 percent and wear by one to two orders of magnitude. Increases i;19952016-10-10T00:25:24Z

NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20040086491: Spaceflight Validation of Hzetrn CodeHZETRN is being developed as a fast deterministic radiation transport code applicable to neutrons, protons, and multiply charged ions in the space environment. It was recently applied to 50 hours of IMP8 data measured during the August 4, 1972 solar event to map the hourly exposures within the human body under several shield configurations. This calculation required only 18 hours on a VAX 4000 machine. A similar calculation using the Monte Carlo method would have required two years of dedicated computer time. The code has been benchmarked against well documented and tested Monte Carlo proton transport codes with good success. The code will allow important trade studies to be made with relative ease due to the computational speed and will be useful in assessing design alternatives in an integrated system software environment. Since there are no well tested Monte Carlo codes for HZE particles, we have been engaged in flight validation of the HZETRN results. To date we have made compariso;19992016-10-16T18:49:09Z

Development of a reliable and valid accuracy-based Pavlovian conditioning task for categorization of sign/goal-trackersThe purpose of this study is to develop a reliable, valid, and practical Pavlovian conditioning task for clinical use to classify sign- and goal-trackers. This newly developed Pavlovian conditioning task must have sufficient reliability and validity, which is crucial for clinical purposes. The categorization results of the newly developed Pavlovian conditioning task should be correlated with the Pavlovian conditioning task based on the eye movements (EM) used in previous studies (e.g., Garofalo & di Pellegrino, 2015; Schad et al., 2020), indicating a criterion-related validity. The eye tracker is difficult to be used in a non-laboratory setting (e.g., it requires much time setting up an eye tracker, but the patients usually do not have time and patience). Instead, button pressing may be more come-in-handy in a clinical setting. The sign-trackers from the newly developed Pavlovian conditioning task are likely to be more impulsive than the goal-trackers, showing a construct validity. The;20232023-07-15T06:02:28Z

Evolution of ferromagnetic order in URhGe alloyed with Ru, Co and SiWe have investigated the evolution of ferromagnetic order in the correlated metal URhGe (Curie temperature $T_{\rm C} = $9.5 K) by chemical substitution of Ru, Co and Si. Polycrystalline samples URh$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$Ge ($x \leq $0.6), URh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge ($x \leq $0.9) and URhGe$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ ($x \leq $0.2) have been prepared and the magnetic properties have been investigated by magnetization and transport experiments. In the case of Ru doping, $T_{\rm C}$ initially increases, but then decreases linearly as a function of $x$ and is completely suppressed for $x_{\rm cr} \approx 0.38$. The Curie temperature in the URh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge series has a broad maximum $T_{\rm C} = 20$ K near $x=0.6$ and then drops to 8 K for $x=0.9$. In the case of Si doping $T_{\rm C}$ stays roughly constant. We conclude that the alloy systems URh$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$Ge and URh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge are interesting candidates to study the ferromagnetic instability.20072013-07-20T19:51:37Z
