| Double-detonation sub-Chandrasekhar supernovae: synthetic observables for minimum helium shell mass models | Abridged. In the double detonation scenario for Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) a detonation initiates in a shell of He-rich material accreted from a companion star by a sub-Chandrasekhar-mass White Dwarf (WD). This shell detonation drives a shock front into the carbon-oxygen (C/O) WD that triggers a secondary detonation in the core. The core detonation results in a complete disruption of the WD. Earlier studies concluded that this scenario has difficulties in accounting for the observed properties of SNe Ia since the explosion ejecta are surrounded by the products of explosive He burning in the shell. Recently, it was proposed that detonations might be possible for much less massive He shells than previously assumed. Moreover, it was shown that even detonations of these minimum He shell masses robustly trigger detonations of the C/O core. Here we present time-dependent multi-wavelength radiative transfer calculations for models with minimum He shell mass and derive synthetic observables f; | 2010 | 2013-09-23T14:01:50Z |
| Some regularity theorems for CR mappings | The purpose of this article is to study Lipschitz CR mappings from an $h$-extendible (or semi-regular) hypersurface in $\mbb C^n$. Under various assumptions on the target hypersurface, it is shown that such mappings must be smooth. A rigidity result for proper holomorphic mappings from strongly pseudoconvex domains is also proved. | 2011 | 2013-09-18T14:15:01Z |
| High-resolution FUSE and HST ultraviolet spectroscopy of the white dwarf central star of Sh 2-216 | LS V +4621 is the DAO-type central star of the planetary nebula Sh 2-216. We perform a comprehensive spectral analysis of high-resolution, high-S/N ultraviolet observations obtained with FUSE and STIS aboard the HST as well as the optical spectrum of LS V +4621 by means of state-of-the-art NLTE model-atmosphere techniques in order to compare its photospheric properties to theoretical predictions from stellar evolution theory as well as from diffusion calculations. From the N IV - NV, O IV - O VI, Si IV - Si V, and Fe V - Fe VII ionization equilibria, we determined an effective temperature of 95 +/- 2 kK with high precision. The surface gravity is log g = 6.9 +/- 0.2. An unexplained discrepancy appears between the spectroscopic distance d = 224 +46/-58 pc and the parallax distance d = 129 +6/-5 pc of LS V +4621. | Magnetic and electric properties of double-perovskites and estimation of their Curie temperatures by ab initio calculations | First principles electronic structure calculations have been carried out on ordered double perovskites Sr_2B'B"O_6 (for B' = Cr or Fe and B" 4d and 5d transition metal elements) with increasing number of valence electrons at the B-sites, and on Ba_2MnReO_6 as well as Ba_2FeMoO_6. The Curie temperatures are estimated ab initio from the electronic structures obtained with the local spin-density functional approximation, full-potential generalized gradient approximation and/or the LDA+U method (U - Hubbard parameter). Frozen spin-spirals are used to model the excited states needed to evaluate the spherical approximation for the Curie temperatures. In cases, where the induced moments on the oxygen was found to be large, the determination of the Curie temperature is improved by additional exchange functions between the oxygen atoms and between oxygen and B' and B" atoms. A pronounced systematics can be found among the experimental and/or calculated Curie temperatures and the total valence e; | 2008 | 2013-07-24T21:32:52Z |
| Chemical abundances of 451 stars from the HARPS GTO planet search program: Thin disc, thick disc, and planets | We present a uniform study of the chemical abundances of 12 elements (Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Na, Mg, and Al) derived from the spectra of 451 stars observed as part of one of the HARPS GTO planet search programs. Sixty eight of these are planet-bearing stars. The main goals of our work are: i) the investigation of possible differences between the abundances of stars with and without planets; ii) the study of the possible differences in the abundances of stars in the thin and the thick disc. We confirm that there is a systematically higher metallicity in planet host stars, when compared to non planet-hosts, common to all studied species. We also found that there is no difference in the galactic chemical evolution trends of the stars with and without planets. Stars that harbour planetary companions simply appear to be in the high metallicity tail of the distribution. We also confirm that Neptunian and super-Earth class planets may be easier to find at lower metallicities. A st; | 2009 | 2013-09-21T22:00:51Z |
| Magnetic field-induced phase transitions in a weakly coupled s = 1/2 quantum spin dimer system Ba$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ | By using bulk magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), heat capacity, and neutron scattering techniques, we characterize the thermodynamic and quantum phase diagrams of Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Our ESR measurements indicate that the low field paramagnetic ground state is a mixed state of the singlet and the S$_z$ = 0 triplet for $H \perp c$. This suggests the presence of an intra-dimer Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction with a DM vector perpendicular to the c-axis. | 2009 | 2013-09-21T21:50:52Z |
| Anomalous Magnetoresistance in Fibonacci Multilayers | The present paper theoretically investigates magnetoresistance curves in quasiperiodic magnetic multilayers for two different growth directions, namely [110] and [100]. We considered identical ferromagnetic layers separated by non-magnetic layers with two different thicknesses chosen based on the Fibonacci sequence. Using parameters for Fe/Cr multilayers, four terms were included in our description of the magnetic energy: Zeeman, cubic anisotropy, bilinear and biquadratic couplings. The minimum energy was determined by the gradient method and the equilibrium magnetization directions found were used to calculate magnetoresistance curves. By choosing spacers with a thickness such that biquadratic coupling is stronger than bilinear coupling, unusual behaviors for the magnetoresistance were observed: (i) for the [110] case there is a different behavior for structures based on even and odd Fibonacci generations; and more interesting, (ii) for the [100] case we found magnetic field ranges fo; | 2012 | 2013-09-21T20:37:29Z |
| Analyticité des applications CR dans des variétés presque complexes | We study the real analyticity of a CR mapping on the hypersurface $\h$ defined by $\h=\{z\in\C^n,\Re(z_n)+|z'|^2=0\}$ in model almost complex manifolds. We make use of a method of prolongation for the tangential Cauchy-Riemann equations and a result about complete systems. We also prove that a CR mapping is real analytic when the almost complex structure of the codomain is a deformation of a model structure and the function defining the hypersurface in the codomain has a particular form. | 2013 | 2013-09-20T00:58:46Z |
| Anisotropic compression in the high pressure regime of pure and Cr-doped vanadium dioxide | We present structural studies of V$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_2$ (pure, 0.7% and 2.5% Cr doped) compounds at room temperature in a diamond anvil cell for pressures up to 20 GPa using synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. All the samples studied show a persistence of the monoclinic $M_1$ symmetry between 4 and 12 GPa. Above 12 GPa, the monoclinic $M_1$ symmetry changes to isostructural $M_x$ phase (space group $P2_1/c$) with a significant anisotropy in lattice compression of the $b$-$c$ plane of the $M_{1}$ phase. This behavior can be reconciled invoking the pressure induced charge-delocalization. | 2012 | 2013-09-23T15:19:36Z |
| An Application of Macaulay's Estimate to CR Geometry | Several questions in CR geometry lead naturally to the study of bihomogeneous polynomials $r(z,\bar{z})$ on $\C^n \times \C^n$ for which $r(z,\bar{z})\norm{z}^{2d}=\norm{h(z)}^2$ for some natural number $d$ and a holomorphic polynomial mapping $h=(h_1,..., h_K)$ from $\C^n$ to $\C^K$. When $r$ has this property for some $d$, one seeks relationships between $d$, $K$, and the signature and rank of the coefficient matrix of $r$. In this paper, we reformulate this basic question as a question about the growth of the Hilbert function of a homogeneous ideal in $\C[z_1,...,z_n]$ and apply a well-known result of Macaulay to estimate some natural quantities. | 2013 | 2013-07-20T09:19:01Z |
| Search for Associations Containing Young stars (SACY): Chemical tagging IC 2391 & the Argus association | We explore the possible connection between the open cluster IC 2391 and the unbound Argus association identified by the SACY survey. In addition to common kinematics and ages between these two systems, here we explore their chemical abundance patterns to confirm if the two substructures shared a common origin. We carry out a homogenous high-resolution elemental abundance study of eight confirmed members of IC 2391 as well as six members of the Argus association using UVES spectra. We derive spectroscopic stellar parameters and abundances for Fe, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Ni and Ba. All stars in the open cluster and Argus association were found to share similar abundances with the scatter well within the uncertainties, where [Fe/H] = -0.04 +/-0.03 for cluster stars and [Fe/H] = -0.06 +/-0.05 for Argus stars. Effects of over-ionisation/excitation were seen for stars cooler than roughly 5200K as previously noted in the literature. | Optimal lower bounds for locality sensitive hashing (except when q is tiny) | We study lower bounds for Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) in the strongest setting: point sets in {0,1}^d under the Hamming distance. Recall that here H is said to be an (r, cr, p, q)-sensitive hash family if all pairs x, y in {0,1}^d with dist(x,y) at most r have probability at least p of collision under a randomly chosen h in H, whereas all pairs x, y in {0,1}^d with dist(x,y) at least cr have probability at most q of collision. Typically, one considers d tending to infinity, with c fixed and q bounded away from 0. For its applications to approximate nearest neighbor search in high dimensions, the quality of an LSH family H is governed by how small its "rho parameter" rho = ln(1/p)/ln(1/q) is as a function of the parameter c. The seminal paper of Indyk and Motwani showed that for each c, the extremely simple family H = {x -> x_i : i in d} achieves rho at most 1/c. The only known lower bound, due to Motwani, Naor, and Panigrahy, is that rho must be at least .46/c (minus o_d(1)). In t; | 2009 | 2013-09-17T23:26:14Z |
| Quantized Anomalous Hall Effect in Magnetic Topological Insulators | The Hall effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the spin Hall effect are fundamental transport processes in solids arising from the Lorentz force and the spin-orbit coupling respectively. The quantum versions of the Hall effect and the spin Hall effect have been discovered in recent years. However, the quantized anomalous Hall (QAH) effect has not yet been realized experimentally. In a QAH insulator, spontaneous magnetic moments and spin-orbit coupling combine to give rise to a topologically non-trivial electronic structure, leading to the quantized Hall effect without any external magnetic field. In this work, based on state-of-art first principles calculations, we predict that the tetradymite semiconductors Bi$_2$Te$_3$, Bi$_2$Se$_3$, and Sb$_2$Te$_3$ form magnetically ordered insulators when doped with transition metal elements (Cr or Fe), in sharp contrast to conventional dilute magnetic semiconductor where free carriers are necessary to mediate the magnetic coupling. | Elemental energy spectra of cosmic rays measured by CREAM-II | We present new measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) nuclei from the second flight of the balloon-borne experiment CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass). The instrument (CREAM-II) was comprised of detectors based on different techniques (Cherenkov light, specific ionization in scintillators and silicon sensors) to provide a redundant charge identification and a thin ionization calorimeter capable of measuring the energy of cosmic rays up to several hundreds of TeV. The data analysis is described and the individual energy spectra of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe are reported up to ~ 10^14 eV. The spectral shape looks nearly the same for all the primary elements and can be expressed as a power law in energy E^{-2.66+/-0.04}. The nitrogen absolute intensity in the energy range 100-800 GeV/n is also measured. | 2010 | 2013-09-17T22:00:32Z |
| Polynomial approximation, local polynomial convexity, and degenerate CR singularities -- II | We provide some conditions for the graph of a Hoelder-continuous function on \bar{D}, where \bar{D} is a closed disc in the complex plane, to be polynomially convex. Almost all sufficient conditions known to date --- provided the function (say F) is smooth --- arise from versions of the Weierstrass Approximation Theorem on \bar{D}. These conditions often fail to yield any conclusion if rank_R(DF) is not maximal on a sufficiently large subset of \bar{D}. We bypass this difficulty by introducing a technique that relies on the interplay of certain plurisubharmonic functions. This technique also allows us to make some observations on the polynomial hull of a graph in C^2 at an isolated complex tangency. | 2011 | 2013-09-19T08:23:17Z |
| Lattice softening effects at the Mott critical point of Cr-doped V$_2$O$_3$ | We have performed sound velocity measurements in (V$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$)$_2$O$_3$ in the vicinity of the critical point of the first order Mott transition line. The pressure sweeps at constant temperature reveal a large dip in the $c_{33}$ compression modulus, this dip sharpens as the critical point is approached. We do not observe signs of criticality on the shear modulus $c_{44}$ which is consistent with a transition governed by a scalar order parameter, in accordance with the DMFT description of the transition. However, the amplitude of the effect is an order of magnitude smaller than the one obtained from DMFT calculations for a single band Hubbard model. We analyze our results using a simple model with the electronic response function obtained from the scaling relations for the conductivity. | 2011 | 2013-09-23T10:38:01Z |
| Geometric sufficient conditions for compactness of the complex Green operator | We establish compactness estimates for $\bar{\partial}_{M}$ on a compact pseudoconvex CR-submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ of hypersurface type that satisfies the (analogue of the) geometric sufficient conditions for compactness of the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann operator given by the authors earlier. These conditions are formulated in terms of certain short time flows in complex tangential directions. | 2010 | 2013-09-19T08:43:13Z |
| Magnetization-based assessment of correlation energy in canted Single-Chain Magnets | We demonstrate numerically that for the strongly anisotropic homometallic S=2 canted single-chain magnet described by the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model the correlation energy and exchange coupling constant can be directly estimated from the in-field-magnetization profile found along the properly selected crystallographic direction. In the parameter space defined by the spherical angles (\phi, \theta) determining the axes orientation, four regions are identified with different sequences of the characteristic field-dependent magnetization profiles representing the antiferromagnetic, metamagnetic and weak ferromagnetic type behavior. These sequences provide a criterion for the applicability of the anisotropic quantum Heisenberg model to a given experimental system. Our analysis shows that the correlation energy decreases linearly with field and vanishes for a given value H_{cr} which defines a special coordinates in the metamagnetic profile relevant for the zero-field correla; | 2012 | 2013-09-23T00:42:07Z |

| Multi-wavelength Emission from the Fermi Bubble II. Secondary Electrons and the Hadronic Model of the Bubble | We analyse the origin of the gamma-ray flux from the Fermi Bubbles (FBs) in the framework of the hadronic model in which gamma-rays are produced by collisions of relativistic protons with the protons of background plasma in the Galactic halo. It is assumed in this model that the observed radio emission from the FBs is due to synchrotron radiation of secondary electrons produced by $pp$ collisions. However, if these electrons loose their energy by the synchrotron and inverse-Compton, the spectrum of secondary electrons is too soft, and an additional arbitrary component of primary electrons is necessary in order to reproduce the radio data. Thus, a mixture of the hadronic and leptonic models is required for the observed radio flux. It was shown that if the spectrum of primary electrons is $\propto E_e^{-2}$, the permitted range of the magnetic field strength is within 2 - 7 $\mu$G region. The fraction of gamma-rays produced by $pp$ collisions can reach about 80% of the total gamma-ray fl; | 2014 | 2018-06-30T09:27:10Z |

| Constraining the X-ray and Cosmic Ray Ionization Chemistry of the TW Hya Protoplanetary Disk: Evidence for a Sub-interstellar Cosmic Ray Rate | We present an observational and theoretical study of the primary ionizing agents (cosmic rays and X-rays) in the TW Hya protoplanetary disk. We use a set of resolved and unresolved observations of molecular ions and other molecular species, encompassing eleven lines total, in concert with a grid of disk chemistry models. The molecular ion constraints comprise new data from the Submillimeter Array on HCO$^+$, acquired at unprecedented spatial resolution, and data from the literature, including ALMA observations of N$_2$H$^+$. We vary the model incident CR flux and stellar X-ray spectra and find that TW Hya's HCO$^+$ and N$_2$H$^+$ emission are best fit by a moderately hard X-ray spectra, as would be expected during the "flaring" state of the star, and a low CR ionization rate, $\zeta_{\rm CR}\lesssim10^{-19}$ s$^{-1}$. This low CR rate is the first indication of the presence of CR exclusion by winds and/or magnetic fields in an actively accreting T Tauri disk system.
