| The effects of adding different kinds of contextual information on the Swiss public’s perception of earthquake likelihoods | A single likelihood is very difficult to evaluate without context or experience. One tool that risk communicators suggest for aiding with comprehension of unfamiliar risks such as damaging earthquakes is the use of comparator risks. Comparisons are thought to put risks in psychological perspective by providing a kind of “conceptual yardstick” [1]. This is thought to improve understanding of risk magnitudes and be more intuitively meaningful than absolute numerical probabilities by allowing less familiar risks to be compared with those that are better known [2–5]. Freeman et al [6] found that comparator risks in and of themselves were helpful to people when trying to understand their personal risk from COVID-19, as it increased the sensitivity of their perception of different levels of risk, as did Savadori et al [7] when studying seismic risk communication. A graphical aid called a risk ladder, which shows the positions of comparator risks along a visual scale, is also often used; | 2022 | 2022-08-09T11:40:45Z |

| NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20170000388: Streamlining the Design Tradespace for Earth Imaging Constellations | Satellite constellations and Distributed Spacecraft Mission (DSM) architectures offer unique benefits to Earth observation scientists and unique challenges to cost estimators. The Cost and Risk (CR) module of the Tradespace Analysis Tool for Constellations (TAT-C) being developed by NASA Goddard seeks to address some of these challenges by providing a new approach to cost modeling, which aggregates existing Cost Estimating Relationships (CER) from respected sources, cost estimating best practices, and data from existing and proposed satellite designs. Cost estimation through this tool is approached from two perspectives: parametric cost estimating relationships and analogous cost estimation techniques. The dual approach utilized within the TAT-C CR module is intended to address prevailing concerns regarding early design stage cost estimates, and offer increased transparency and fidelity by offering two preliminary perspectives on mission cost. This work outlines the existing cost model; | 2016 | 2021-02-06T00:40:47Z |

| DTIC ADP011912: Studies of Manganites by Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Methods | In this work, we present the studies of manganites with superfluous manganese content performed by the magnetic resonance spectroscopy methods. The ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) has been measured on the (La(0.7)Ca(0.3))(1-x)Mn(1+x)O3 films. The symmetrical FMR line in paramagnetic phase has the Dysonian-like shape below T(sub c). The FMR linewidth increases abruptly near the transition temperature. By comparing resonance fields oriented parallel and perpendicular to the film plane, the easy axis of magnetization was determined to be perpendicular to the film plane. In the perpendicular magnetic field, the spin-wave resonance (SWR) spectrum consisting of seventeenth of spin - wave modes has been observed in the La(0.7)Mn(1.3)O3 film. Two of them observed on the high-field side of SWR spectrum are connected to a surface modes. The others are the bulk nonuniform spin-wave modes. Based on a study of temperature and angular dependencies of SWR and FMR spectra, the spin-wave stiffness, g-fac; | 2001 | 2015-10-31T05:53:17Z |

| Anomalous Magnetoresistance in Fibonacci Multilayers | The present paper theoretically investigates magnetoresistance curves in quasiperiodic magnetic multilayers for two different growth directions, namely [110] and [100]. We considered identical ferromagnetic layers separated by non-magnetic layers with two different thicknesses chosen based on the Fibonacci sequence. Using parameters for Fe/Cr multilayers, four terms were included in our description of the magnetic energy: Zeeman, cubic anisotropy, bilinear and biquadratic couplings. The minimum energy was determined by the gradient method and the equilibrium magnetization directions found were used to calculate magnetoresistance curves. By choosing spacers with a thickness such that biquadratic coupling is stronger than bilinear coupling, unusual behaviors for the magnetoresistance were observed: (i) for the [110] case there is a different behavior for structures based on even and odd Fibonacci generations; and more interesting, (ii) for the [100] case we found magnetic field ranges fo; | 2012 | 2013-09-21T20:37:29Z |
| An Application of Macaulay's Estimate to CR Geometry | Several questions in CR geometry lead naturally to the study of bihomogeneous polynomials $r(z,\bar{z})$ on $\C^n \times \C^n$ for which $r(z,\bar{z})\norm{z}^{2d}=\norm{h(z)}^2$ for some natural number $d$ and a holomorphic polynomial mapping $h=(h_1,..., h_K)$ from $\C^n$ to $\C^K$. When $r$ has this property for some $d$, one seeks relationships between $d$, $K$, and the signature and rank of the coefficient matrix of $r$. In this paper, we reformulate this basic question as a question about the growth of the Hilbert function of a homogeneous ideal in $\C[z_1,...,z_n]$ and apply a well-known result of Macaulay to estimate some natural quantities. | 2013 | 2013-07-20T09:19:01Z |
| Quantized Anomalous Hall Effect in Magnetic Topological Insulators | The Hall effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the spin Hall effect are fundamental transport processes in solids arising from the Lorentz force and the spin-orbit coupling respectively. The quantum versions of the Hall effect and the spin Hall effect have been discovered in recent years. However, the quantized anomalous Hall (QAH) effect has not yet been realized experimentally. In a QAH insulator, spontaneous magnetic moments and spin-orbit coupling combine to give rise to a topologically non-trivial electronic structure, leading to the quantized Hall effect without any external magnetic field. In this work, based on state-of-art first principles calculations, we predict that the tetradymite semiconductors Bi$_2$Te$_3$, Bi$_2$Se$_3$, and Sb$_2$Te$_3$ form magnetically ordered insulators when doped with transition metal elements (Cr or Fe), in sharp contrast to conventional dilute magnetic semiconductor where free carriers are necessary to mediate the magnetic coupling.
