| DTIC ADA159631: A Multi-Isotope Procedure for Simultaneously Estimating the Volume of Body Fluid Compartments of Swine. | The purpose of the studies reported in this paper was to develop isotope-based procedures to measure plasma volume, red cell volume, extracellular fluid volume, and total body water individually. Subsequently, techniques would be developed to use a combination of these procedures to measure some or all of the fluid spaces in the pig simulaneously. A procedure was developed for simultaneously estimating the volume of all major body fluid compartments. Splenectomized pigs, 20 to 25 kg, with chronically-implanted carotid artery catheters, received a bolus injection (per kg) (1 uCi 125 I-albumin, 11.7 uCi 51Cr-EDTA, 0.6 uCi 22Na, and 5.3 uCi 3H2O) followed by a 5.2 uCi ml/kg injection of 51 Cr-tagged red cells. Estimated lean body mass averaged 822 g/kg and body fat, 178 g/kg. The new procedure was rapid, technically simple, required small amounts of blood and was applicable to conscious animals. | 1985 | 2018-02-03T03:39:46Z |
| DTIC ADA172484: MOPAC Manual: A General Molecular Orbital Package. 3rd Edition, 2nd Version | MOPAC is a general-purpose, semi-empirical molecular orbital program for the study of chemical reactions involving molecules, ions, and linear polymers. It implements the semi-empirical Hamiltonians MNDO, AM1 and MINDO/3 and combines the calculations of vibrational spectra, thermodynamic quantities, isotopic substitution effects, and force constants in a fully integrated program. Elements parameterized at the MNDO level include H, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Cr, Ge, Br, Sn, Hg, Pb, and I. Within the electronic part of the calculation, molecular and localized orbitals excited states up to sextets, chemical bond indices, charges, etc. are computed. Both intrinsic and dynamic reaction coordinates can be calculated. A transition-state location routine and two transition-state optimizing routines are available for studying chemical reactions. | 1986 | 2018-02-10T06:40:02Z |
| DTIC ADA124705: Depth-Resolved Cathodoluminescence Study of Annealed Silicon Implanted Gallium Arsenide. | Depth-resolved cathodoluminescence was performed on Si ion implanted GaAs. The samples were Cr doped semi-insulating GaAs crystals grown using the horizontal Bridgman method. Nine samples were prepared for this study, four were implanted with 100 keV Si ions at a fluence of 10 to the 13th power/sq. cm, and five were left unimplanted. One each of the implanted and unimplanted samples were annealed at 800 C for 10 minutes, 800 C for 10 seconds, 900 C for 10 minutes, or 900 C for 10 seconds, for a total of eight samples. The ninth sample was left unannealed and unimplanted as a control. Cathodoluminescence data was taken using 1000 V electrons as an excitation source. Depth resolution was achieved by taking spectral data and successively chemically etching the surface of the crystal in 250 A steps. No new peaks were observed in the GaAs during the experiment. The 800 C/10 minute anneal proved to have the greatest effect in optically activating the impurities in the unimplanted samples. Th; | 1982 | 2018-01-09T11:18:40Z |
| DTIC ADA379697: Experimental Study of Metal Corrosion in Supercritical Brines: Application to Supercritical Water Oxidation of Hazardous Wastes | The corrosion behavior of Hastelloy C, ticanium, zirconium, niobium, tantalum, and gold have been studied as a function of temperature (200 degrees - 4000 degrees C), acid concentration (0 0.02 mol/Kg), oxygen content (0.1-1 mol %) and NaCi content (0-0.2 mol/Kg). The intent of these experiments was to determine an empirical rate law for corrosion of these metals as a function of the parameters listed above. Due to the complexity of the corrosion behavior of these metals and the different responses of different metals, rate law determination was not possible. However, our results qualitatively indicate that Nb and Zr are not suitable for service under SCWO conditions, for they rapidly convert to oxides which erode into the fluid. Ti proved resistant to dissolution into the fluids, but was subject to pitting corrosion. Au was subject to galvanic effects, which increased its dissolution rate. This suggests that gold would not be suitable for use with other metals in a SCWO system. Stainl; | 2000 | 2018-04-28T17:38:34Z |
| DTIC ADA433616: Phosphorus-Nitrogen Compounds | The chemistry of P-N compounds is characterized by the existence of polymeric compounds. Many derivatives of the six membered ring system (NPCl(sub2)) and of the eight membered system (NPCl(sub 2))(sub 4) are known Therefore, the reaction of PCl(sub 5) with NH(sub 4)Cl has been studied The intermediates of this reaction could be isolated. In the re port a short review of useful substances derived from the trimeric and the polymeric phospho-nitrilic chlorides is given. There are also four membered P-N ring compounds. These four membered ring systems their preparation and their properties e.g. their structure, are described. Polymeric substances containing such a four membered ring system are formed with aromatic dihydroxy compounds and also with Cr(CO)(sub 6). Some four membered ring systems may be condensated. A compound with 3 four membered P-N ring systems was formed, in which the 3 ring systems are connected by a P-Cl bridge. | ERIC ED414581: Your Life is a C+: Assigning and Assessing the Personal Essay in First Year Composition. | In the hope that students would develop authority in their writing, they were instructed to write a personal essay about themselves. Most of the essays, however, were mediocre and formulaic. While one student's experience of the painful loss of his mother to cancer was tragic, his essay was cliched. Supporters of the use of personal essay in first-year composition believe that autobiography helps students to situate themselves within a larger cultural context and thus be more aware of and able to critique that context. Critics, however, are most often concerned about students being revictimized by being forced to reveal painful experiences in English classes. Often students' prose is more lucid when writing autobiography, but that does not necessarily lead to their writing better analytical, academic prose. One of the biggest problems with the autobiographical assignment is the assessment of these essays. The easiest to assess is the preliminary autobiographical assignment which can be; | 1997 | 2015-12-23T11:30:25Z |
| ERIC ED439561: Has Technology Been Considered? A Guide for IEP Teams. CASE/TAM Assistive Technology Policy and Practice Series. | This guide compiles information essential to a working knowledge of assistive technology for children with disabilities. It addresses the definition of assistive technology and provides information on laws which direct the provision of assistive technology. The manual provides a framework to guide the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team as they consider the use of assistive technology with a child who has exceptional education needs. Steps in consideration include: (1) review what the child should be able to do and is unable to do because of a disability; (2) review what has been tried to meet the need; (3) decide whether current intervention is working; (4) review evidence on current interventions; (5) discuss what has been tried and for how long; (6) decide whether the team has the knowledge and resources necessary to continue to meet the need; (7) develop a plan as a team with additional assistance as needed; and (8) remember that consideration is an ongoing process. One mother opted for a medical treatment, and the other mother opted for a non-medical treatment. The boy who is medically treated is 14, and the non-medically treated boy is 12. Findings from the study indicate: (1) as toddlers both boys exhibited similar behavior patterns that both mothers considered to be out of the norm; however, they did not act on them until the boys entered elementary school, when they were advised by teachers to have their children evaluated for ADD; (2) the medically treated boy was examined and evaluated by a neurologist, while the non-medically treated boy was not; (3) the main difference in the treatment selection process of both mothers was the perception of the negative effects of drug therapy that the mother of the non-medically treated boy held; (4) both mothers were satisfie; | 2000 | 2016-01-03T17:26:46Z |
| ERIC ED445060: An Evaluation of "Intentional" Weighting of Extended-Response or Constructed-Response Items in Tests with Mixed Item Types. | This study investigated the practice of weighting a type of test item, such as constructed response, more than other types of items, such as selected response, to compute student scores for a mixed-item type of test. The study used data from statewide writing field tests in grades 3, 5, and 8 and considered two contexts, that in which a single extended response writing prompt is "intentionally" or "purposefully" weighted twice in computing student scores (ER context) and one in which a set of constructed response items, including one extended response item, is intentionally weighted twice (CR context). The weighting option was compared with the use of no weighting. In either context, the criterion for the two options (weighting and no weighting with a shorter form) was the administration of twice as many items as the items that are deliberately weighted, combined with no use of weighting. | Lid for DoogieLabs' CR-10S bowden drive with guide and filament sensing (2770180) | Printed as-is in Gembird PETG (Dutch manufacturer) at 235°C with 80°C heated bed, "Everyday" brand (generic) hairspray on a 300x300 mirror directly on top of the aluminium plate. 50 mm/s worked fine for me, YMMV. Has a 2° taper on the part that goes inside the sensor housing, and fits in just fine at 100% on my printer. It's not loose, but it is easy to remove, so you may want to oversize to 101% or 102% to make it a tighter fit. The reason the actual extruder parts aren't shown in the picture is because, as you can see in the second picture, it's mounted directly above my hot end to turn the printer into a makeshift direct drive-alike. The reason it's not color coordinated is because I was testing different filaments and wasn't sure how well this would work yet. | 2018 | 2021-01-18T09:09:07Z |

Two heats of CORONA 5, one of 'standard' oxygen content (0.183 wt %) and one of low oxygen content (0.085 wt %) were processed to fine-grained, 0.07 in (1.8 mm) sheet and limited characterization of the sheet material conducted. Superplastic properties were determined at 843, 871 and 899 C; diffusion bonding parameters were predicted for all three temperatures and evaluated at 871 C. Adequate superplastic properties were observed at all temperatures with the lower temperatures exhibiting better properties. The optimum superplastic forming and diffusion bonding temperature was found to be 871 C, particularly for low oxygen material. Pan forming tests at all three temperatures and the expanded sandwich test at 871 C confirmed these observations. The results of the prog; | 1981 | 2017-12-17T17:34:55Z |

| DTIC ADA088542: Electrodeposition of Tantalum and Tantalum-Chromium Alloys | A part of a program to develop erosion resistant coatings for advanced gun barrels, electrodeposition of tantalum and tantalum-chromium alloys from fused FLINAK (eutectic mixture of LiF-KF-NaF) has been investigated. Tantalum-chromium alloys containing 2-6% chromium were obtained by codepositing tantalum and chromium from an electrolyte containing 10 wt% TaF5(added as K2TaF7) and 0.5-1.5% Cr (added as CrF3), at 800 C and 15-40 ma/sq cm current density. The alloy coatings were smooth and columnar in structure. The microhardness of these coatings increased with the increase of chromium content. | 1980 | 2017-12-05T19:18:38Z |
| NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19860022230: The effect of variations of cobalt content on the cyclic oxidation resistance of selected Ni-base superalloys | Cobalt levels were systematically varied in the Ni-base turbine alloys U-700 (cast), U-700m(PM/HIP), Waspaloy, Mar-M-247, In-738, Nimonic-115, U-720, and SX-R-150. The cobalt levels ranged from 0 wt % to the nominal commercial content in each alloy. The alloys were tested in cyclic oxidation in static air at 1000, 1100 and 1150 C for 500, 200 and 100 hr respectively. An oxidation attack parameter, Ka derived from the specific weight change versus time data was used to evaluate the oxidation behavior of the alloys along with X-ray diffraction analysis of the surface oxides. The alloys tend to form either Cr2O3/chromite spinel or Al2O3/aluminate spinel depending on the CR/Al ratio in the alloys. Alloys with a ratio of 3.5 or higher tend to favor the Cr oxides while those under 3.0 form mostly Al oxides. In general the Al2O3/aluminate spinel forming alloys have the better oxidation resistance. Increased cobalt content lowers the scaling resistance of the higher Cr alloys while a 5.0 wt % ; | 1986 | 2016-09-17T11:03:39Z |
| NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19830006396: Electromagnetic studies of redox systems for energy storage | Both chromium and iron couples were studied on various electrode surfaces in acidic perchlorate solution by using rotating ring-disk techniques. It was found that chloride which forms inner sphere coordination complexes with the redox species enhances the electrode kinetics dramatically. The effects of lead underpotential deposition and surface alloy formation on the kinetics of the chromium couple on gold were studied using both linear sweep voltammetry and potential step techniques. The lad underpotential deposition was found to slow down the kinetics of the reduction of the Cr species on gold surfaces although increase the hydrogen overvoltage. The effect on the chromium kinetics can be explained in terms of principally a double layer effect. The underpotential deposition lead species with its positive charge results in a decrease in the concentration of the Cr species at the electrode surface. Similar phenomena were also observed with bismuth underpotential deposition on gold for t; | 1981 | 2016-08-12T09:50:05Z |
| NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19830016367: The effects of Ni, Mo, Ti and Si on the mechanical properties of Cr free Mn steel (Fe-25Mn-5Al-2C) | The FeMnAlC alloys may hold potential as Cr-free replacements for high strategic material iron base superalloys, but little is known about their intermediate temperature (650 C to 870 C) mechanical properties. The effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of model FeMnAlC alloys were studied. Results showed that modified FeMnAlC alloys had promising short term, intermediate temperature properties but had relatively poor stress rupture lives at 172 MPa and 788 C. Room temperature and 788 C tensile strength of FeMnAlC alloys were better than common cast stainless steels. Changes in room temperature tensile and 788 C tensile strength and ductility, and 788 C stress rupture life were correlated with changes in Ni, Mo, Ti, and Si levels due to alloying effects on interstitial carbon levels and carbide morphology. Fe-25Mn-5Al-2C had a very poor stress rupture life at 172 MPa and 788 C. Addition of carbide-forming elements improved the stress rupture life. | 1982 | 2016-08-16T01:59:10Z |
| NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19850013295: Evaluation results of the 700 deg C Chinese strain gauges. [for gas turbine engine] | Gauges fabricated from specially developed Fe-Cr-Al-V-Ti-Y alloy wire in the Republic of China were evaluated for use in static strain measurement of hot gas turbine engines. Gauge factor variation with temperature, apparent strain, and drift were included. Results of gauge factor versus temperature tests show gauge factor decreasing with increasing temperature. The average slope is -3-1/2 percent/100 K, with an uncertainty band of + or - 8 percent. Values of room temperature gauge factor for the Chinese and Kanthal A-1 gauges averaged 2.73 and 2.12, respectively. The room temperature gauge factor of the Chinese gauges was specified to be 2.62. The apparent strain data for both the Chinese alloy and Kanthal A-1 showed large cycle to cycle nonrepeatability. All apparent strain curves had a similar S-shape, first going negative and then rising to positive value with increasing temperatures. | NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19850010763: Effects of MAR-M247 substrate (modified) composition on coating oxidation coating/substrate interdiffusion. M.S. Thesis. Final Report; [protective coatings for hot section components of gas turbine engines] | The effects of gamma+gamma' Mar-M247 substrate composition on gamma+beta Ni-Cr-Al-Zr coating oxidation and coating/substrate interdiffusion were evaluated. These results were also compared to a prior study for a Ni-Cr-Al-Zr coated gamma Ni-Cr-Al substrate with equivalent Al and Cr atomic percentages. Cyclic oxidation behavior at 1130 C was investigated using change in weight curves. Concentration/distance profiles were measured for Al, Cr, Co, W, and Ta. The surface oxides were examined by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that variations of Ta and C concentrations in the substrate do not affect oxidation resistance, while additions of grain boundary strengthening elements (Zr, Hf, B) increase oxidation resistance. In addition, the results indicate that oxidation phenomena in gamma+beta/gamma+gamma' Mar-M247 systems have similar characteristics to the l gamma+beta/gamma Ni-Cr-Al system. | 1985 | 2016-09-13T09:05:58Z |

| NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19850026526: Cosmic ray modulation in a random anisotropic magnetic field | Inhomogeneities of the interplanetary magnetic field can be divided into small scale and large scale ones as may be required by the character of the problem of cosmic ray (CR) propagation. CR propagation in stochastic magnetic fields is of diffusion character. The main contribution into the scattering of CR particles is made by their interaction with inhomogeneities of the magnetic field H which have characteristic dimensions 1 of the order of Larmor radius R=cp/eH of particle (p is the absolute value of particle momentum, e is particle charge, c is velocity of light). Scattering of particles on such inhomogeneities leads to their diffusion mostly along a magnetic field with characteristic dimensions of variation in space exceeding the mean free path. | 1985 | 2016-09-13T21:35:23Z |
| NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900009243: Identification of a cast iron alloy containing nonstrategic elements | A program was performed to address the mechanical and environmental needs of Stirling engine heater head and regenerator housing components, while reducing the dependence on strategic materials. An alloy was developed which contained no strategic elemental additions per se. The base is iron with additions of manganese, molybdenum, carbon, silicon, niobium, and ferro-chromium. Such an alloy should be producible on a large scale at very low cost. The resulting alloy, designated as NASAUT 4G-Al, contained 15 Mn, 15 Cr, 2 Mo, 1.5 C, 1.0 Si, 1.0 Nb (in weight percent) with a balance of Fe. This alloy was optimized for chemistry, based upon tensile strength, creep-rupture strength, fracture behavior, and fatigue resistance up to 800 C. Alloys were also tested for environmental compatibility. The microstructure and mechanic properties (including hardness) were assessed in the as-cast condition and following several heat treatments, including one designed to simulate a required braze cycle. | NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20170000388: Streamlining the Design Tradespace for Earth Imaging Constellations | Satellite constellations and Distributed Spacecraft Mission (DSM) architectures offer unique benefits to Earth observation scientists and unique challenges to cost estimators. The Cost and Risk (CR) module of the Tradespace Analysis Tool for Constellations (TAT-C) being developed by NASA Goddard seeks to address some of these challenges by providing a new approach to cost modeling, which aggregates existing Cost Estimating Relationships (CER) from respected sources, cost estimating best practices, and data from existing and proposed satellite designs. Cost estimation through this tool is approached from two perspectives: parametric cost estimating relationships and analogous cost estimation techniques. The dual approach utilized within the TAT-C CR module is intended to address prevailing concerns regarding early design stage cost estimates, and offer increased transparency and fidelity by offering two preliminary perspectives on mission cost. | NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20160002381: Assessing the Formation of Ungrouped Achondrite Northwest Africa 8186: Residue | The recent discoveries of primitive achondrites, metachondrites, and type 7 chondrites challenge the long held idea that all chondrites and achondrites form on separate parent bodies. These meteorites have experienced metamorphic temperatures above petrologic type 6 and have partially melted to various degrees. However, because of their isotopic and compositional similarities to both undifferentiated and differentiated groups, the provenance of these 'type 6+' meteorites remains largely unknown. CK and CV chondrites have recently been linked to a few achondrites due to their strong compositional, mineralogical, and isotopic similarities], suggesting a common origin between these meteorites. | NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20080014318: The Chronology of Asteroid Accretion, Differentiation, and Secondary Mineralization | We evaluate initial (Al-26/Al-27)(sub I), (Mn-53/Mn-55)(sub I), (Hf-182/Hf-180)(sub I), and Pb-207/Pb-206 ages for igneous differentiated meteorites and chondrules from ordinary chondrites for consistency with radioactive decay of the parent nuclides within a common, closed isotopic system, i.e., the early solar nebula. We find that the relative abundances of Al-26, Mn-53, and Hf-182, here denoted by I(Al)(sub CAI, I(Mn)(sub CAI) and I(Hf)(sub CAI), are consistent with decay from common initial values for the bulk solar system. I(Mn)(sub CAI) and I(Hf)(sub CAI) = 9.1+/-1.7 x 10(exp -6) and 1.06+/-0.09 x 10(exp -6) respectively, correspond to the canonical value of I(Al)(sub CAI) = 5.1 x 10(exp -5). I(Hf)(sub CAI) thus determined is consistent with I(Hf)(sub CAI) = 1.003+/-0.045 x 10(exp -6) directly determined in separate work. | NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20010059237: Burner Rig Hot Corrosion of Five Ni-Base Alloys Including Mar-M247 | The hot corrosion resistance of four new Ni-base superalloys was compared to that of Mar-M247 by testing in a Mach 0.3 burner rig at 900 C for 300 1-hr cycles. While the Al content was held the same as in the Mar-M247, the Cr and Co levels in the four new alloys were decreased while other strengthening elements (Re, Ta) were increased. Surprisingly, despite their lower Cr and Co contents, the hot corrosion behavior of all four new alloys was superior to that of the Mar-M247 alloy. The Mar-M247 alloy began to lose weight almost immediately whereas the other four alloys appeared to undergo an incubation period of 50-150 1-hr cycles. Examination of the cross-sectional microstructures showed regions of rampant corrosion attack (propagation stage) in all five alloys after 300 1-hr cycles . This rampant corrosion morphology was similar for each of the alloys with Ni and Cr sulfides located in an inner subscale region.
