Association of autopsy rates and misclassification of suicides and accident deaths in Europe and North AmericaThe suicide misclassification theory proposes that deaths from suicide (X60-X84, Y870) and accidental deaths (V01-X32, X43, X46-X59, Y40-Y86, Y88, Y89, U12.9) may be hard to distinguish from each other. Therefore, declining autopsy rates may enable the misclassification of these causes of death. To investigate and compare the effects of declining autopsy rates on the misclassification of deaths, two models will be conducted. The first will investigate suicides as outcome and the second will focus on accidental deaths as outcome, both including the covariates: (a) substance-related deaths (i.e. drug overdose deaths (F11-F16, F18-F19, X41-X42, X44) and deaths stemming from alcohol use disorders (F10, X45)), (b) ill-defined causes, (i.e. ill-defined diseases (R00-R94, R96-R99)), (c) ill-defined injuries (Y10-Y34, Y872), (c) unemployment rate (%) and (d) urbanisation (%). In addition, the model predicting suicides will include accidental deaths as a covariate, whilst the model predicting a;20232023-06-12T16:19:50Z

Education, Gender, and Family FormationWe study the effect of educational attainment on family formation using regression discontinuity designs generated by centralized admissions processes to both secondary and tertiary education in Finland. Our results so far show that, at both margins, admission to further education increases the probability that women form families -- i.e. have children or cohabit. For men, our point estimates are near zero, and sometimes negative. Data collection began on March 13th, 2024 We are collecting survey data in Finland to explore potential mechanisms underlying our results. In this pre-registration we are registering the hypotheses which we are going to test -- before collecting the data new data. Our hypotheses which might explain these results are the following: 1) education may provide women with access to more flexible work arrangements, making it easier to combine career and family; 2) as social skills have become more important over time, and parental -- particularly mother's -- inputs ;20242024-03-13T16:25:39Z

Hippocampal subfield volume in people with regular cannabis useCannabis is the most commonly used illegal drug (49.6 million current users in the US)(SAMHSA, 2021). In the context of changing recreational and medical cannabis laws, cannabis use in the US is increasing (SAMHSA, 2021), and will likely continue to do so (Cerda, Wall, Keyes, Galea, & Hasin, 2012). Due to its extremely high prevalence, adverse sequelae associated with cannabis use, such as cognitive deficits (Ashtari et al., 2011), differences in underlying brain structure (Rocchetti et al., 2013; Schacht, Hutchison, & Filbey, 2012; Yücel et al., 2008), and increased risk for psychosis (Di Forti et al., 2019), present a substantial and growing public health concern. A robust finding in the extant literature is that people who regularly smoke cannabis show decreased volume in bilateral hippocampus, a region rich in cannabinoid receptors (Nader & Sanchez, 2018; Rocchetti et al., 2013; Schacht et al., 2012; Yücel et al., 2008). Cannabis-related alterations to hippocampal morphology and ;20222022-12-05T00:06:24Z
Tackling the Barriers to Employment Experienced by Autistic Adults through an Online InterventionThere are approximately 500,000 autistic adults currently living in the UK. The Office for National Statistics published a report in 2021 indicating that only 22% of autistic adults are in any kind of employment compared to 80% of non-autistic and non-disabled adults. Autistic people are at greater risk of social isolation, poor mental health, and premature mortality (Schiltz et al. 2021; Cassidy et al. 2022). Employment provides numerous opportunities for social interaction, increases financial independence, provides a sense of accomplishment and is known to be associated with improved mental health in the general population (Evans & Repper, 2000). Once in employment, job satisfaction is associated with improved health, well-being, and reduced anxiety in autistic people (Harkry et al., 2017). The UK government has identified “supporting more autistic people into employment” as one of six major priorities via their National Autism Strategy (2021-2026). The strategy highlights the i;20242025-03-15T19:01:03Z
Contagious laughter. A comparison of motor inhibition effectiveness based on social emotional context.Contagious laughter is a phenomenon in which laughter spreads rapidly among individuals, serving as a powerful social signal (Dezecache et. al., 2012, Levy et al., 1979). This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of motor inhibition in response to laughter, while considering the influence of socio-emotional context. By manipulating emotional social feedback we aim to explore how social appraisal and facial laughter mimicry influence the subjective experience of amusement as well as the effectiveness to inhibit laughter. To explore the relationship between motor inhibition, subjective amusement, and socio-emotional context, we will utilize pre-recorded interaction partners who will appraise joke stimuli. We will create a social context by incorporating laughter videos, aiming to manipulate the perception of humorous stimuli. Participants will listen to humorous auditory stimuli and subsequently view neutral or laughter feedback videos, while their facial muscle reactions are reco;20232024-01-31T09:07:28Z

7C and what else? Associations with vaccination and freedom in the Covid-contextThe long-standing tradition of vaccination readiness research has gained particular importance and general interest during the recent Covid-19 pandemic. A widely-used theory which was expanded during the pandemic are the (7) Cs of vaccination readiness (Geiger et al., 2021). The concept of the 7 Cs was deductively developed, that is, derived from theoretical assumptions rather than inductively formed on the basis of data. We have collected data which due to the nature of the collection method - free association with the terms vaccination and freedom in the context of Covid-19 - is uniquely suited for testing these 7 Cs against an empirical background: When people are simply freely associating with the term “vaccination”, do the 7 Cs all show up? What other factors show up? What is the predictor of all factors identified for vaccination status? We discuss implications for the future development and application of the 7 Cs model, as well as for vaccination-related communication. Rese;20232023-05-08T07:01:12Z

Hierarchical vs. Binary Coding: Experiment 3Cognitive control is often context-specific. For instance, changing the modality-specific task set across consecutive trials often eliminates the congruency sequence effect (CSE), an index of cognitive control (Hazeltine et al., 2011; Grant et al., 2020). To further investigate modality-specific boundaries of the CSE, we recently conducted an experiment involving a modified version of the cross-modal prime-probe task. As in prior studies, trial stimuli were presented in either the auditory or the visual modality (i.e., “auditory” trials and “visual” trials). Unlike in prior studies, however, participants responded to both the prime and the probe (vs. just the probe) in every trial. Under these task conditions, we found that changing the modality-specific task set across consecutive trials reduced, but did not eliminate, the CSE. Such findings support the binary coding view, which posits that repeating an abstract, previous-trial feature (e.g., the overall S-R mapping) in the cu;20212022-09-30T06:00:26Z

Public Opinion of CybersecurityHow might Americans respond to a cyberattack as opposed a more traditional kinetic one? On the one hand, public opinion might react in a consequentialist way to the damage done, having the same reaction whether an attack is cyber or traditionally kinetic in nature. On the other hand, a literature in moral psychology suggests that the visceral nature of a physical attack will engender more outrage, and therefore a likely more punitive response, than an invisible, computerized one. For instance, in the neuropsychology literature on trolley car dilemmas, pushing an individual to their death to save others is more difficult for individuals to do than pulling a lever, even though the effect is the same. We hypothesize that such a logic might operate in the responses to such attacks by others, in which case cyberattacks, even with the same effects, will generate less opporbrium and less desire for retaliation and at lower levels. Cyber attacks are also more likely to have an indirect effect ;20222023-01-01T07:00:24Z
Instrumental goals for supporting Russia and response to the Russian-Ukraine warThis project will investigate the effects of instrumental goals for supporting Russia and people's response to the Russian-Ukraine war. More specifically, we will investigate the relationship between instrumental goals for supporting Russia (i.e., instrumental goals for cooperation with Russia) and a) support for Russian invasion, b) support for sanctions against Russia, c) identification with the EU and the NATO, and d) conspiracy beliefs against the US. We will further investigate the moderating role of identity goals (i.e. need for inclusion to the superordinate categories of EU and NATO) in the above relationships.20222022-05-11T09:20:18Z
Technology and Online Tools in Spiritual Care Education and Training: a scoping reviewIntroduction Spirituality and spiritual care are deep-rooted at the bottom of the person, but their definition has resulted in an enormous challenge for the scientific community. The European Association for Palliative Care definition (1) gathers the most consensus of healthcare-related organisations as the spiritual dimension is multidimensional but also may not be transferable or universally acceptable because of limitations like culture, context, and language (2). Furthermore, the undergraduate nursing curricula lack of specific spiritual care education contributes to inadequate acquisition and development of spiritual care skills and competencies. Therefore, through a systematic, consensual, and effective response involving multiple partners and experts from different European countries, the EPICC project (Nurses' and Midwives' Competence in Providing Spiritual Care through Innovative Education and Compassionate Care)(2) was conducted and has been implemented as a turning point in ;20232023-10-16T07:00:41Z
Influence of Culture on Behavior Management of Children in the Dental Clinic: A scoping reviewINTRODUCTION Background and Rationale Behaviour management in paediatric dentistry is essential for delivering effective oral healthcare and fostering positive experiences [1,2]. Cultural factors influence parental involvement and expectations, children's responses, and the acceptability of different behaviour management techniques (BMTs). Cultural values impact how parents and children perceive dental visits and respond to behaviour management techniques [3,4]. Some cultures favour non-invasive techniques like Tell-Show-Do, while others accept more restrictive interventions [5-8]. Despite the significance of cultural considerations, research on their role in paediatric dental settings is limited [9]. Existing guidelines often use a universal approach, overlooking critical cultural differences that may determine their behaviour management preferences [10]. This scoping review seeks to fill this gap by systematically mapping existing literature and provide insights into the role of cult;20252025-03-18T07:02:05Z

Hypoxia training protocols in a normobaric environment in the aviation context: a scoping review protocolHypoxia can be generated in different ways and is widely used in training and/or research environments. Although the use of a hypobaric chamber is recognized as the gold standard for training hypoxia symptoms, its use exposes the crew/trainers to the risks inherent in reducing barometric pressure, such as decompression sickness and barotrauma. On the other hand, it is possible to find in the literature other equipment capable of generating hypoxia without promoting the deleterious effects of pressure reduction. Hypoxia training in a normobaric environment is capable of providing identification of signs and symptoms with a view to preventing aeronautical accidents. In this context, this review aims to map the different types of equipment, as well as the protocols used to generate normobaric hypoxia in the aviation context. To contemplate this objective, only the original studies that described the training protocol to simulate normobaric hypoxia were included. In addition, other inclusi;20232023-06-03T01:06:39Z
The Effect of Suggestive Influence on Trait and State AnxietyThis study critically assesses whether a trait and state measure of anxiety and subsequent trait and state anxiety scores can be suggestively influenced by misinformation. Participants will complete the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) two times in sessions 48-hours apart. Just prior to the second session, participants will be assigned to one of four conditions: (a) Misinformation increase (trait anxiety scale), in which they will be provided feedback suggesting that they had chosen a higher value for half of the trait anxiety items than they had actually chosen in session 1. The other half of the trait anxiety items will provide correct feedback as a within-subjects control.
