Spectral Transformation Algorithms for Computing Unstable Modes of Large Scale Power SystemsIn this paper we describe spectral transformation algorithms for the computation of eigenvalues with positive real part of sparse nonsymmetric matrix pencils $(J,L)$, where $L$ is of the form $\pmatrix{M&0\cr 0&0}$. For this we define a different extension of M\"obius transforms to pencils that inhibits the effect on iterations of the spurious eigenvalue at infinity. These algorithms use a technique of preconditioning the initial vectors by M\"obius transforms which together with shift-invert iterations accelerate the convergence to the desired eigenvalues. Also, we see that M\"obius transforms can be successfully used in inhibiting the convergence to a known eigenvalue. Moreover, the procedure has a computational cost similar to power or shift-invert iterations with M\"obius transforms: neither is more expensive than the usual shift-invert iterations with pencils. Results from tests with a concrete transient stability model of an interconnected power system whose Jacobian matrix has o;20102013-09-23T13:47:24Z

These are submitted in response to your telephone recommendation of 21 August that we pursue, at this time, these studies on technical intelligence, data handling, the wash-dry chamber, annc~Tp oottographic mater al handling. You will note that the estimated manpower requirements for each of these coincides with the figures I passed on to Phil. Although I haven't seen these figures, I assume that is aware that this is the level of activity we are contemplating on these four technical directives. In this respect, I am quite sure tiat we are all using the same numbers. When I advised Phil of these figures, I predicated the estimates on a start work date of 1 September. It would have been more accurate to say 1 September, or there abouts. I don't :_e;19612024-05-07T15:04:00Z

Atypical thermodynamic behavior of Ce compounds in the vicinity of zero temperature Critical PointsA systematic analysis of thermodynamic properties performed on Ce-base exemplary compounds allows to identify different types of behaviors as the system approaches the quantum critical region. They are recognized in the respective magnetic phase boundaries (T_{N,C}(x)) as a change from the classical negative curvature to a linear composition ($x$) dependence, the occurrence of a critical point or the evanescence at finite temperature under pressure at finite temperature. In the first case, an anomalous reduction of the entropy S_m respect to the S_m = RLn2 value (expected for the usual Ce-magnetic doublet ground state) is observed around x_{cr}, and analyzed taking profit of detailed studies performed on CeIn_{3-x}Sn_x alloys. As expected from Maxwell relations, the volume variation V_0(x) at T=>0 also shows a non-monotonous behavior around x_{cr}. Different regimes in the entropy variation of the ordered phase (S_{MO}) are recognized. Only in the former case S_{MO}=> 0 continuously as;20112013-09-21T10:29:58Z

New alphabet-dependent morphological transition in a random RNA alignmentWe study the fraction $f$ of nucleotides involved in the formation of a cactus--like secondary structure of random heteropolymer RNA--like molecules. In the low--temperature limit we study this fraction as a function of the number $c$ of different nucleotide species. We show, that with changing $c$, the secondary structures of random RNAs undergo a morphological transition: $f(c)\to 1$ for $c \le c_{\rm cr}$ as the chain length $n$ goes to infinity, signaling the formation of a virtually "perfect" gapless secondary structure; while $f(c) c_{\rm cr}$, what means that a non-perfect structure with gaps is formed. The strict upper and lower bounds $2 \le c_{\rm cr} \le 4$ are proven, and the numerical evidence for $c_{\rm cr}$ is presented. The relevance of the transition from the evolutional point of view is discussed.20122013-09-23T05:47:15Z

Kohn-Rossi Cohomology and its application to the Complex Plateau Problem IIILet $X$ be a compact connected strongly pseudoconvex $CR$ manifold of real dimension 2n-1 in $\mathbb{C}^{N}$. It has been an interesting question to find an intrinsic smoothness criteria for the complex Plateau problem. For $n\ge 3$ and $N=n+1$, Yau found a necessary and sufficient condition for the interior regularity of the Harvey-Lawson solution to the complex Plateau problem by means of Kohn-Rossi cohomology groups on $X$ in 1981. For n=2 and $N\ge n+1$, the problem has been open for over 30 years. In this paper we introduce a new CR invariant $g^{(1,1)}(X)$ of $X$. The vanishing of this invariant will give the interior regularity of the Harvey-Lawson solution up to normalization. In case $n=2$ and N=3, the vanishing of this invariant is enough to give the interior regularity.20122013-07-20T07:16:26Z

C, N, O abundances and carbon isotope ratios in evolved stars of the open clusters Collinder 261 and NGC 6253Context. Investigations of abundances of carbon and nitrogen in the atmospheres of evolved stars of open clusters may provide comprehensive information on chemical composition changes caused by stellar evolution. Aims. Our main aim is to increase the number of open clusters with determined carbon-to nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios. Methods. High-resolution spectra were analysed using a differential model atmosphere method. Abundances of carbon were derived using the C_2 Swan (0,1) band head at 5635.5 {\AA} (FEROS spectra) and the C_2 Swan (1,0) band head at 4737 {\AA} (UVES spectra). The wavelength interval 7980-8130 {\AA}, with strong CN features was analysed to determine nitrogen abundances and 12^C/13^C isotope ratios. The oxygen abundances were determined from the [Oi] line at 6300 {\AA}. Results. The average value of 12^C/13^C isotope ratios of Cr 261 is equal to 18 \pm 2 in four giants and to 12 \pm 1 in two clump stars; it is equal to 16 \pm 1 in four clump stars of the open ;20122013-07-20T07:01:24Z
Magnetic excitations of the gapped quantum spin dimer antiferromagnet Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ consist of a lattice of spin-1/2 Cr$^{5+}$ ions, which form hexagonal bilayers and which are paired into dimers by the dominant antiferromagnetic intrabilayer coupling. The dimers are coupled three-dimensionally by frustrated interdimer interactions. A structural distortion from hexagonal to monoclinic leads to orbital order and lifts the frustration giving rise to spatially anisotropic exchange interactions. We have grown large single crystals of Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and have performed DC susceptibility, high field magnetisation and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The neutron scattering experiments reveal three gapped and dispersive singlet to triplet modes arising from the three twinned domains that form below the transition thus confirming the picture of orbital ordering. The exchange interactions are extracted by comparing the data to a Random Phase Approximation model and the dimer coupling is found to be $J_{0}=5.55$ meV, while the ratio of i;20092013-09-19T22:47:29Z
