At the time I was really into Lady B 's Beat Street show because of the music and extended mixes. On sections of the tape with her segments you'll hear extended remixes of songs and possibly live DJ mixing and effects. No commercials, but plenty of Lady B chatting including about a basketball game plus live mixing and rapping. Original recorder was an Emerson CTR-949 Ghetto Blaster. This archive contains hi-res scans of the cassettes & jackets! Track list with a couple of songs I couldn't identify. A repeat/break in the listing denotes a new recording. | A spectroscopic study of the Globular Cluster M28 (NGC~6626) | We present the abundance analysis for a sample of 17 red giant branch stars in the metal-poor globular cluster M28 based on high resolution spectra. This is the first extensive spectroscopic study of this cluster. We derive abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, and Eu. We find a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.29+-0.01 and an alpha-enhancement of +0.34+-0.01 (errors on the mean), typical of Halo Globular Clusters in this metallicity regime. A large spread is observed in the abundances of light elements O, Na, and Al. Mg also shows an anticorrelation with Al with a significance of 3 sigma. The cluster shows a Na-O anticorrelation and a Na-Al correlation. This correlation is not linear but "segmented" and that the stars are not distributed continuously, but form at least 3 well separated sub-populations. In this aspect M28 resembles NGC~2808 that was found to host at least 5 sub-populations. The presence of a Mg-Al anticorrelation favor massi; | 2016 | 2018-06-29T17:43:45Z |
| Evolution of magnetic fluctuations through the Fe-induced paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition in Cr$_2$B | In itinerant ferromagnets, the quenched disorder is predicted to dramatically affect the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic quantum phase transition driven by external control parameters at zero temperature. Here we report a study on Fe-doped Cr$_2$B, which, starting from the paramagnetic parent, orders ferromagnetically for Fe-doping concentrations $x$ larger than $x_{\rm c}=2.5$\%. In parent Cr$_2$B, $^{11}$B nuclear magnetic resonance data reveal the presence of both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The latter are suppressed with Fe-doping, before the ferromagnetic ones finally prevail for $x>x_{\rm c}$. Indications for non-Fermi liquid behavior, usually associated with the proximity of a quantum critical point, were found for all samples, including undoped Cr$_2$B. The sharpness of the ferromagnetic-like transition changes on moving away from $x_{\rm c}$, indicating significant changes in the nature of the magnetic transitions in the vicinity of the quantum critical poi; | 2016 | 2018-06-29T15:24:23Z |
| Josephson effect and Andreev reflection in Ba(1-x)NaxFe2As2 (x=0.25 and 0.35) point contacts | I(V) characteristics and their first derivatives of ScS and ScN-type (S-superconductor, c-constriction, N-normal metal) point-contacts (PCs) based on Ba{1-x}NaxFe2As2 ($x$=0.25 and 0.35) were studied. ScS-type PCs with S=Nb,Ta and Pb show Josephson-like resistively shunted I(V) curves with microwave induced Shapiro steps which satisfy relation 2eV=hw. The I_cR_N product (I_c-critical current, R_N-- normal state PC resistance) in these PCs is found to be up to 1.2mV. All this data with the observed dependence of the I_c on the microwave power of ScS PCs with Pb counterelectrode indicates the presence of the singlet s-wave type pairing in Ba(1-x)NaxFe2As2. From the dV/dI(V) curves of ScN-type PCs demonstrating Andreev-reflection like features, the superconducting gap ratio 2\Delta/k_BT_c = 3.6 \pm 1 for the compound with x=0.35 was evaluated. Analysis of these dV/dI(V) at high biases V, that is well above \Delta, testifies transition to the thermal regime in PCs with a voltage increase. | 2014 | 2018-06-30T06:35:07Z |
| Deriving precise parameters for cool solar-type stars. Optimizing the iron line list | Temperature, surface gravity, and metallicitity are basic stellar atmospheric parameters necessary to characterize a star. We aim to improve the description of the spectroscopic temperatures especially for the cooler stars where the differences with the Infrared Flux Method are higher, as presented in previous work. Our spectroscopic analysis is based on the iron excitation and ionization balance, assuming Kurucz model atmospheres in LTE. The abundance analysis is determined using the code MOOG. We optimize the line list using a cool star with high resolution and high signal-to-noise spectrum, as a reference in order to check for weak, isolated lines. We test the quality of the new line list by re-deriving stellar parameters for 451 stars with high resolution and signal-to-noise HARPS spectra, that were analyzed in a previous work with a larger line list. The comparison in temperatures between this work and the latest IRFM shows that the differences for the cooler stars are significant; | 2013 | 2013-07-20T09:18:42Z |
| Cartan equivalences for 5-dimensional CR-manifolds in C^4 belonging to General Class III_1 | We reduce to various absolute parallelisms, namely to certain {e}-structures on manifolds of dimensions 7, 6, 5, the biholomorphic equivalence problem or the intrinsic CR equivalence problem for generic submanifolds M^5 in C^4 of CR dimension 1 and of codimension 3 that are maximally minimal and are geometry-preserving deformations of one natural cubic model of Beloshapka, somewhere else called the General Class III-1 of 5-dimensional CR manifolds. Some inspiration links exist with the treatment of the General Class II previously done in 2007 by Beloshapka, Ezhov, Schmalz, and also with the classification of nilpotent Lie algebras due to Goze, Khakimdjanov, Remm. | 2014 | 2018-06-30T00:41:52Z |
| VO2 nanosheets: controlling the THz properties through strain engineering | We investigate far-infrared properties of strain engineered vanadium dioxide nanosheets through epitaxial growth on a (100)R TiO2 substrate. The nanosheets exhibit large uniaxial strain leading to highly uniform and oriented cracks along the rutile c-axis. Dramatic anisotropy arises for both the metal-insulator transition temperature, which is different from the structural transition temperature along the cR axis, and the metallic state conductivity. Detailed analysis reveals a Mott-Hubbard like behavior along the rutile cR axis. | 2011 | 2013-09-24T00:36:31Z |
| Chemical Abundances in the Globular Clusters NGC 6229 and NGC 6779 | Long-slit medium-resolution spectra of the Galactic globular clusters (GCs) NGC6229 and NGC6779, obtained with the CARELEC spectrograph at the 1.93-m telescope of the Haute-Provence observatory, have been used to determine the age, helium abundance (Y), and metallicity [Fe/H] as well as the first estimate of the abundances of C, N, O, Mg, Ca, Ti, and Cr for these objects. We solved this task by comparing the observed spectra and the integrated synthetic spectra, calculated with the use of the stellar atmosphere models with the parameters preset for the stars from these clusters. The model mass estimates, $T_{\rm eff}$, and log~g were derived by comparing the observed "color-magnitude" diagrams and the theoretical isochrones. The summing-up of the synthetic blanketed stellar spectra was conducted according to the Chabrier mass function. To test the accuracy of the results, we estimated the chemical abundances, [Fe/H], $\log~t$, and $Y$ for the NGC5904 and NGC6254 clusters, which, accord; | 2015 | 2018-06-26T20:14:44Z |

| Propagation of secondary antiprotons and cosmic rays in the Galaxy | Recent measurements of the cosmic ray (CR) antiproton flux have been shown to challenge existing CR propagation models. It was shown that the reacceleration models designed to match secondary to primary nuclei ratios (e.g., B/C) produce too few antiprotons. In the present paper we discuss one possibility to overcome these difficulties. Using the measured antiproton flux AND B/C ratio to fix the diffusion coefficient, we show that the spectra of primary nuclei as measured in the heliosphere may contain a fresh local "unprocessed" component at low energies perhaps associated with the Local Bubble, thus decreasing the measured secondary to primary nuclei ratio. The independent evidence for SN activity in the solar vicinity in the last few Myr supports this idea. The model reproduces antiprotons, B/C ratio, and elemental abundances up to Ni (Z | 2003 | 2013-09-20T16:02:31Z |

| Structure and Bonding in Amorphous Cr1-xCx Nanocomposite Thin Films: X-ray Absorption Spectra and First-Principles Calculation | The local structure and chemical bonding in two-phase amorphous Cr$_{1-x}$C$_{x}$ nanocomposite thin films are investigated by Cr $K$-edge ($1s$) X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies in comparison to theory. By utilizing the computationally efficient \textit{stochastic quenching} (SQ) technique, we reveal the complexity of different Cr-sites in the transition metal carbides, highlighting the need for large scale averaging to obtain theoretical XANES and EXAFS spectra for comparison with measurements. As shown in this work, it is advantageous to use \textit{ab initio} theory as an assessment to correctly model and fit experimental spectra and investigate the trends of bond lengths and coordination numbers in complex amorphous materials. With sufficient total carbon content ($\geq$ 30 at\%), we find that the short-range coordination in the amorphous carbide phase exhibit similarities to that of a Cr$_{7}$C$_{3\pm; | 2016 | 2018-06-29T19:48:10Z |
| UVES - VLT High Resolution Spectroscopy of GRB Afterglows | We present early time, high resolution spectroscopy of three GRB afterglows: GRB050730, GRB050922C and GRB060418. These data give us precious information on the kinematics, ionization and metallicity of the interstellar matter of GRB host galaxies up to a redshift z = 4, and of intervening absorbers along the line of sight. The absorption spectra show that elements are present both with high and low ionization states, and even forbidden, fine structure levels are commonly observed. These features allow us to evaluate the physical parameters of the absorbing gas. In details, the density of the gas regions lie in the range n = 10 - 10^6 cm-3, and the temperatures are of the order of T = 10^3 - 10^4 K. The metallicity of the GRB host galaxies is computed using the hydrogen absorption features. We find undersolar abundances for our GRBs, namely, Z = 0.001 - 0.01. | Helicity protected ultrahigh mobility Weyl fermions in NbP | Non-centrosymmetric transition metal monopnictides, including TaAs, TaP, NbAs, and NbP, are emergent topological Weyl semimetals (WSMs) hosting exotic relativistic Weyl fermions. In this letter, we elucidate the physical origin of the unprecedented charge carrier mobility of NbP, which can reach $1\times10^{7}$ cm $^{2}$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ at 1.5 K. Angle- and temperature-dependent quantum oscillations, supported by density function theory calculations, reveal that NbP has the coexistence of p- and n-type WSM pockets in the $k_{z}$=1.16$\pi$/c plane (W1-WSM) and in the $k_{z}$=0 plane near the high symmetry points $\Sigma$ (W2-WSM), respectively. Uniquely, each W2-WSM pocket forms a large dumbbell-shaped Fermi surface (FS) enclosing two neighboring Weyl nodes with the opposite chirality. The magneto-transport in NbP is dominated by these highly anisotropic W2-WSM pockets, in which Weyl fermions are well protected from defect backscattering by real spin conservation associated to the chira; | 2015 | 2018-06-27T22:08:44Z |
| Experimental consequences of $p_z$-wave spin triplet superconductivity in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ | The experimental observable properties of the triplet $p_z$-wave pairing state, proposed by Wu {\em et al.} [arXiv:1503.06707] in quasi-one dimensional A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ materials, are theoretically investigated. This pairing state is characterized by the line nodes on the $k_z=0$ plane on the Fermi surfaces. Based on the three-band tight binding model, we obtain the specific heat, superfluid density, Knight shift and spin relaxation rate and find that all these properties at low temperature ($T\ll T_c$) show powerlaw behaviors and are consistent available experiments. Particularly, the superfluid density determined by the $p_z$-wave pairing state in this quasi-one dimensional system is anisotropic: the in-plane superfluid density varies as $\Delta\rho_{\parallel}\sim T$ but the out-plane one varies as $\Delta\rho_{\perp}\sim T^3$ at low temperature. The anisotropic upper critical field reported in experiment is consistent with the $S_z=0$ (i.e., $(\uparrow\downarrow+\downarrow\uparrow; | 2015 | 2018-06-28T06:08:20Z |
| Bounded linear operators between C^*-algebras | Let $u:A\to B$ be a bounded linear operator between two $C^*$-algebras $A,B$. The following result was proved by the second author. Theorem 0.1. There is a numerical constant $K_1$ such that for all finite sequences $x_1,\ldots, x_n$ in $A$ we have $$\leqalignno{&\max\left\{\left\|\left(\sum u(x_i)^* u(x_i)\right)^{1/2}\right\|_B, \left\|\left(\sum u(x_i) u(x_i)^*\right)^{1/2}\right\|_B\right\}&(0.1)_1\cr \le &K_1\|u\| \max\left\{\left\|\left(\sum x^*_ix_i\right)^{1/2}\right\|_A, \left\|\left(\sum x_ix^*_i\right)^{1/2}\right\|_A\right\}.}$$ A simpler proof was given in [H1]. More recently an other alternate proof appeared in [LPP]. In this paper we give a sequence of generalizations of this inequality. | 1993 | 2013-09-22T02:37:26Z |
| The population of deformed bands in $^{48}$Cr by emission of $^{8}$Be from the $^{32}$S + $^{24}$Mg reaction | Using particle-$\gamma$ coincidences we have studied the population of final states after the emission of 2 $\alpha$-particles and of $^{8}$Be in nuclei formed in $^{32}$S+$^{24}$Mg reactions at an energy of $\textrm{E}_{\rm L}(^{32}\textrm{S}) = 130 {\rm MeV}$. The data were obtained in a setup consisting of the GASP $\gamma$-ray detection array and the multidetector array ISIS. Particle identification is obtained from the $\Delta$E and E signals of the ISIS silicon detector telescopes, the $^{8}$Be being identified by the instantaneous pile up of the $\Delta$E and E pulses. $\gamma$-ray decays of the $^{48}$Cr nucleus are identified with coincidences set on 2 $\alpha$-particles and on $^{8}$Be. Some transitions of the side-band with $K^\pi=4^{-}$ show stronger population for $^{8}$Be emission relative to that of 2 $\alpha$-particles (by a factor $1.5-1.8$). This observation is interpreted as due to an enhanced emission of $^{8}$Be into a more deformed nucleus. Calculations based on t; | 2001 | 2013-09-24T01:21:35Z |
| Volumes of convex lattice polytopes and a question of V. I. Arnold | We show by a direct construction that there are at least $\exp\{cV^{(d-1)/(d+1)}\}$ convex lattice polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of volume $V$ that are different in the sense that none of them can be carried to an other one by a lattice preserving affine transformation. This is achieved by considering the family $\mathcal{P}^d(r)$ (to be defined in the text) of convex lattice polytopes whose volumes are between $0$ and $r^d/d!$. Namely we prove that for $P \in \mathcal{P}^d(r)$, $d!\mathrm{vol\;} P$ takes all possible integer values between $cr^{d-1}$ and $r^d$ where $c>0$ is a constant depending only on $d$. | 2014 | 2018-06-30T02:10:03Z |

| Inferred cosmic-ray spectrum from ${\it Fermi}$-LAT $\gamma$-ray observations of the Earth's limb | Recent accurate measurements of cosmic-ray (CR) species by ATIC-2, CREAM, and PAMELA reveal an unexpected hardening in the proton and He spectra above a few hundred GeV, a gradual softening of the spectra just below a few hundred GeV, and a harder spectrum of He compared to that of protons. These newly-discovered features may offer a clue to the origin of high-energy CRs. We use the ${\it Fermi}$ Large Area Telescope observations of the $\gamma$-ray emission from the Earth's limb for an indirect measurement of the local spectrum of CR protons in the energy range $\sim 90~$GeV-$6~$TeV (derived from a photon energy range $15~$GeV-$1~$TeV). Our analysis shows that single power law and broken power law spectra fit the data equally well and yield a proton spectrum with index $2.68 \pm 0.04$ and $2.61 \pm 0.08$ above $\sim 200~$GeV, respectively. | 2014 | 2018-06-30T02:34:11Z |

XAS in the Mn and Cr L{2,3} edges support stable single valent Cr{3+} ions and a varying Mn valence state with x, while the O K edge XAS spectrum reveals local maxima in the O 2p density of states close to the Fermi level due to mixing with Mn and Cr 3d states. A robust antiferromagnetic state is found for x=0.70 below TN = 258 K. For x=0.15, combined XMCD and bulk magnetization measurements indicate a fully polarized ferrimagnetic state for the Mn and Cr spins below Tc=224 K. For x=0.50, a reduced ferrimagnetic component dominated by Mn spins is present below Tc=154 K. | Tri-critical point and suppression of the Shastry-Sutherland phase in Ce$_{2}$Pd$_{2}$Sn by Ni doping | Structural, magnetization and heat capacity measurements were performed on Ce$_2$(Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$Sn ($0 \leq x \leq 0.25$) alloys, covering the full range of the Mo$_2$FeB$_2$ structure stability. In this system, the two transitions observed in Ce$_2$Pd$_2$Sn (at $T_N=4.8$\,K and $T_C=2.1$\,K respectively) converge into a tri-critical point at $T_{cr}\approx 3.4$\,K for $x\approx 0.3$, where the intermediate antiferromagnetic AF phase is suppressed. The $T_N(x)$ phase boundary decrease is due to an incipient Kondo screening of the Ce-4f moments and local atomic disorder in the alloy. Both mechanisms affect the formation of Ce-magnetic dimers on which the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) builds up. On the contrary, the $T_C(x)$ transition to the ferromagnetic ground state increases as a consequence of the weakening of the AF-SSL phase. Applied magnetic field also suppresses the AF phase like in the stoichiometric compound. | 2011 | 2013-09-23T15:22:32Z |
| On the Deformation Parameter in SLq(2) Models of the Elementary Particles | When the fundamental invariant of $SLq(2)$ is expressed as $\epsilon_q = (\matrix{0 & \alpha_2 \cr -\alpha_1 & 0})$, then the deformation parameter, $q$, defining the knot algebra is $q = \frac{\alpha_1}{\alpha_2}$. We consider models in which the elementary particles carry more than one kind of charge with running coupling constants, $\alpha_1$ and $\alpha_2$, having different energy dependence and belonging to different gauge groups. Let these coupling constants be normalized to agree with experiment at hadronic energies and written as $\alpha_1 = \frac{e}{\sqrt{\hbar c}}$ and $\alpha_2 = \frac{g}{\sqrt{\hbar c}}$. Then $q = \frac{e}{g}$. If $e$ is an electroweak coupling and $g$ is a gluon coupling, $q$ will increase with energy. In previous discussions of $SLq(2)$ it has been assumed that $\epsilon_q^{2} = -1$. If this condition is maintained, then $eg = \hbar c$. | On Levi-flat hypersurfaces with prescribed boundary | We address the problem of existence and uniqueness of a Levi-flat hypersurface $M$ in $C^n$ with prescribed compact boundary $S$ for $n\ge3$. The situation for $n\ge3$ differs sharply from the well studied case $n=2$. We first establish necessary conditions on $S$ at both complex and CR points, needed for the existence of $M$. All CR points have to be nonminimal and all complex points have to be "flat". Then, adding a positivity condition at complex points, which is similar to the ellipticity for $n=2$ and excluding the possibility of $S$ to contain complex $(n-2)$-dimensional submanifolds, we obtain a solution $M$ to the above problem as a projection of a possibly singular Levi-flat hypersurface in $R\times C^n$. It turns out that $S$ has to be a topological sphere with two complex points and with compact CR orbits, also topological spheres, serving as boundaries of the (possibly singular) complex leaves of $M$. There are no more global assumptions on $S$ like being contained in the b; | 2009 | 2013-09-23T09:14:46Z |
| Metastability of hadronic compact stars | Pure hadronic compact stars, above a threshold value of their gravitational mass (central pressure), are metastable to the conversion to quark stars (hybrid or strange stars). In this paper, we present a systematic study of the metastability of pure hadronic compact stars using different relativistic models for the equation of state (EoS). In particular, we compare results for the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model with those for the Glendenning--Moszkowski parametrization of the non-linear Walecka model (NLWM). For QMC model, we find large values ($M_{cr} = 1.6$ -- $1.9 M_\odot$) for the critical mass of the hadronic star sequence and we find that the formation of a quark star is only possible with a soft quark matter EoS. For the Glendenning--Moszkowski parametrization of the NLWM, we explore the effect of different hyperon couplings on the critical mass and on the stellar conversion energy. We find that increasing the value of the hyperon coupling constants shifts the bulk transition ; | 2008 | 2013-09-20T11:24:20Z |
| Magnetic fields and chemical peculiarities of the very young intermediate-mass binary system HD 72106 | The recently discovered magnetic Herbig Ae and Be stars may provide qualitatively new information about the formation and evolution of magnetic Ap and Bp stars. We have performed a detailed investigation of one particularly interesting binary system with a Herbig Ae secondary and a late B-type primary possessing a strong, globally ordered magnetic field. Twenty high-resolution Stokes V spectra of the system were obtained with the ESPaDOnS instrument mounted on the CFHT. In these observations we see clear evidence for a magnetic field in the primary, but no evidence for a magnetic field in the secondary. A detailed abundance analysis was performed for both stars, revealing strong chemical peculiarities in the primary and normal chemical abundances in the secondary. The primary is strongly overabundant in Si, Cr, and other iron-peak elements, as well as Nd, and underabundant in He. The primary therefore appears to be a very young Bp star. | Three carbon-enhanced metal-poor dwarf stars from the SDSS - Chemical abundances from CO^5BOLD 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres | The origin of carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars enriched with both s and r elements is highly debated. Detailed abundances of these types of stars are crucial to understand the nature of their progenitors. The aim of this investigation is to study in detail the abundances of SDSS J1349-0229, SDSS J0912+0216 and SDSS J1036+1212, three dwarf CEMP stars, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using high resolution VLT/UVES spectra (R ~ 30 000) we determine abundances for Li, C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and 21 neutron-capture elements. We made use of CO^5BOLD 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres in the analysis of the carbon, nitrogen and oxygen abundances. NLTE corrections for C I and O I lines were computed using the Kiel code. We classify SDSS J1349-0229 and SDSS J0912+0216 as CEMP-r+s stars. SDSS J1036+1212 belongs to the class CEMP-no/s, with enhanced Ba, but deficient Sr, of which it is the third member discovered to date. | AGILE detection of GeV gamma-ray emission from the SNR W28 | Supernova remnants (SNRs) are believed to be the main sources of Galactic cosmic rays. Molecular clouds associated with SNRs can produce gamma-ray emission through the interaction of accelerated particles with the concentrated gas. The middle aged SNR W28, for its associated system of dense molecular clouds, provides an excellent opportunity to test this hypothesis. We present the AGILE/GRID observations of SNR W28, and compare them with observations at other wavelengths (TeV and 12CO J=1-->0 molecular line emission). The gamma-ray flux detected by AGILE from the dominant source associated with W28 is (14 +- 5) 10^-8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 for E > 400 MeV. This source is positionally well correlated with the TeV emission observed by the HESS telescope. The local variations of the GeV to TeV flux ratio suggest a difference between the CR spectra of the north-west and south molecular cloud complexes. | Limit on a Right-Handed Admixture to the Weak $b \to c$ Current from Semileptonic Decays | We determine an upper bound for a possible right-handed $b{\to}c$ quark current admixture in semileptonic $\bar{B} \to X_{c} \ell^{-} \bar{\nu}$ decays from a simulateous fit to moments of the lepton-enery and hadronic-mass distribution measured as a function of the lower limit on the lepton energy, using data measured by the \babar\ detector. The right-handed admixture is parametrized by a new parameter $c_R$ as coefficient of computed moments with right-handed quark current. For the standard model part we use the prediction of the heavy-quark expansion (HQE) up to order $1/m_b^3$ and perturbative corrections and for the right-handed contribution only up to order $1/m_b^2$ and perturbative corrections. We find $\cR=0.05\asympm{+0.33}{-0.50}$ in agreement with the standard-model prediction of zero. Additionally, we give a contraint on a possible right-handed admixture from exclusive decays, which is with a value of $\cR =0.01{\pm}0.03$ more restrictive than our value from the inclusive; | 2010 | 2013-09-17T22:02:33Z |

| High Resolution Optical Spectroscopy of the F Supergiant Proto-Planetary Nebula V887 Her=IRAS 18095+2704 | An abundance analysis is presented for IRAS 18095+2704 (V887 Her), a post-AGB star and proto-planetary nebula. The analysis is based on high-resolution optical spectra from the McDonald Observatory and the Special Astrophysical Observatory. Standard analysis using a classical Kurucz model atmosphere and the line analysis program MOOG provides the atmospheric parameters: Teff = 6500 K, log g = +0.5, and a microturbulent velocity Vt = 4.7 km/s and [Fe/H] = -0.9. Extraction of these parameters is based on excitation of FeI lines, ionization equilibrium between neutral and ions of Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Fe, and the wings of hydrogen Paschen lines. Elemental abundances are obtained for 22 elements and upper limits for an additional four elements. These results show that the star's atmosphere has not experienced a significant number of C- and s-process enriching thermal pulses. | Elementary Pseudoconcavity and fields of CR meromorphic functions | Let M be a smooth CR manifold of CR dimension n and CR codimension k, which is not compact, but has the local extension property E. We introduce the notion of "elementary pseudoconcavity" for M, which extends to CR manifolds the concept of a "pseudoconcave" complex manifold. This notion is then used to obtain generalizations, to the noncompact case, of the results of our previous paper about algebraic dependence, transcendence degree and related matters for the field K(M) of CR meromorphic functions on M. | 2007 | 2013-09-23T21:54:26Z |
| Beyond the Iron Peak: r- and s-process Elemental Abundances in Stars with Planets | We present elemental abundances of 118 stars (28 of which are known extrasolar planetary host stars) observed as part of the Anglo-Australian Planet Search. Abundances of O, Mg, Cr, Y, Zr, Ba, Nd and Eu (along with previously published abundances for C and Si) are presented. This study is one of the first to specifically examine planetary host stars for the heavy elements produced by neutron capture reactions. We find that the host stars are chemically different to both the standard solar abundance and non-host stars in all elements studied, with enrichments over non-host stars ranging from 0.06 dex (for O) to 0.11 dex (for Cr and Y). Such abundance trends are in agreement with other previous studies of field stars and lead us to conclude that the chemical anomalies observed in planetary host stars are the result of normal galactic chemical evolution processes. Based on this observation, we conclude that the observed chemical traits of planetary host stars are primordial in origin, com; | 2008 | 2013-07-20T19:27:01Z |
| Electronic structure of Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N and Si-doping effects studied by photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy | The electronic structure of the magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N and the effect of Si doping on it have been investigated by photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We have confirmed that Cr in GaN is predominantly trivalent substituting for Ga, and that Cr 3$d$ states appear within the band gap of GaN just above the N 2$p$-derived valence-band maximum. As a result of Si doping, downward shifts of the core levels (except for Cr 2$p$) and the formation of new states near the Fermi level were observed, which we attribute to the upward chemical potential shift and the formation of a small amount of Cr$^{2+}$ species caused by the electron doping. Possibility of Cr-rich cluster growth by Si doping are discussed based on the spectroscopic and magnetization data. | 2008 | 2013-09-22T14:28:53Z |
| Accurate and homogeneous abundance patterns in solar-type stars of the solar neighbourhood: a chemo-chronological analysis | We report the abundances of C, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, Nd, and Sm in 25 solar-type stars in the solar neighbourhood, and their correlations with ages, kinematics, and orbital parameters. The spectroscopic analysis, based high resolution and high S/N ratio data, was differential to the Sun and applied to atomic line EWs and to C and C2 spectral synthesis. We performed a statistical study using a tree clustering analysis, searching for groups of stars sharing similar abundance patterns. We derived Teff, log(g), and [Fe/H] with errors of 30 K, 0.13 dex, and 0.05 dex, respectively. The average error in [X/Fe] is 0.06 dex. Ages were derived from theoretical HR diagrams and memberships in kinematical moving groups. We identified four stellar groups: with over-solar abundances ( = +0.26 dex), under-solar abundances ( = -0.24 dex), and intermediate values ( = -0.06 and +0.06 dex) but with distinct chemical patterns. | Theory of High T$_c$ Ferrimagnetism in a Multi-orbital Mott Insulator | We propose a model for the multi-orbital material Sr$_2$CrOsO$_6$ (SCOO), an insulator with remarkable magnetic properties and the highest $T_c \simeq 725$ K among {\em all} perovskites with a net moment. We derive a new criterion for the Mott transition $(\widetilde{U}_{1} \widetilde{U}_{2})^{1/2}>2.5W$ using slave rotor mean field theory, where $W$ is the bandwidth and $\widetilde{U}_{1(2)}$ are the effective Coulomb interactions on Cr(Os) including Hund's coupling. We show that SCOO is a Mott insulator, where the large Cr $\widetilde{U}_{1}$ compensates for the small Os $\widetilde{U}_{2}$. The spin sector is described by a frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model that naturally explains the net moment arising from canting and also the observed non-monotonic magnetization $M(T)$. We predict characteristic magnetic structure factor peaks that can be probed by neutron experiments. | 2013 | 2013-09-20T00:23:32Z |
