But phone manufacturers've been slow to fix the bug--- it was first discovered last month. So some of them are making changes to fix problems more quickly..... But why's it been taking so long to fix Stagefright? B-B-C says it's because there are a lot of different varieties of Android out there... | Wall-Fluid and Liquid-Gas Interfaces of Model Colloid-Polymer Mixtures by Simulation and Theory | We perform a study of the interfacial properties of a model suspension of hard sphere colloids with diameter $\sigma_c$ and non-adsorbing ideal polymer coils with diameter $\sigma_p$. For the mixture in contact with a planar hard wall, we obtain from simulations the wall-fluid interfacial free energy, $\gamma_{wf}$, for size ratios $q=\sigma_p/\sigma_c=0.6$ and 1, using thermodynamic integration, and study the (excess) adsorption of colloids, $\Gamma_c$, and of polymers, $\Gamma_p$, at the hard wall. | Dwarf Galaxies of the Local Group | The Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxies offer a unique window to the detailed properties of the most common type of galaxy in the Universe. In this review, I update the census of LG dwarfs based on the most recent distance and radial velocity determinations. I then discuss the detailed properties of this sample, including (a) the integrated photometric parameters and optical structures of these galaxies, (b) the content, nature and distribution of their ISM, (c) their heavy-element abundances derived from both stars and nebulae, (d) the complex and varied star-formation histories of these dwarfs, (e) their internal kinematics, stressing the relevance of these galaxies to the dark-matter problem and to alternative interpretations, and (f) evidence for past, ongoing and future interactions of these dwarfs with other galaxies in the Local Group and beyond. | The Chemistry of the Local Group | Simulations of the chemical enrichment histories of ten Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxies are presented, employing empirically-derived star formation histories (SFHs), a rich network of isotopic and elemental nucleosynthetic yields, and a range of prescriptions for supernova (SN)-driven outflows. Our main conclusions are that (i) neutron-capture element patterns (particularly that of Ba/Y) suggest a strong contribution from low- and intermediate-mass stars, (ii) neutron star mergers may play a relatively larger role in the nucleosynthesis of dwarfs, (iii) SN feedback alone can explain the observed gas fraction in dwarf irregulars (dIrrs), but dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) require almost all their gas to be removed via ram pressure and/or tidal stripping, (iv) the predicted heavy Mg isotope enhancements in the interstellar medium of dwarfs may provide an alternate solution to claims of a varying fine structure (v) the gas lost from dwarfs have O,Si/C abundances in broad agreement with interga; | 2007 | 2013-09-19T17:50:14Z |
| Anomaly of the non-ergodicity parameter and crossover to white noise in the fast relaxation spectrum of a simple glass former | We present quasi-elastic light scattering (LS) and dielectric (DS) spectra of the glass former alpha-picoline (13K < T < 320K). At high temperatures the evolution of the susceptibility minimum is well described by mode coupling theory (MCT) yielding a critical temperature T_c = 162K +- 5K. At T_c > T > T_g the excess wing of the alpha-process identified in the DS spectra and characterized by a power-law exponent c is rediscovered in the LS spectra. Introducing a universal evolution for c = c[lg(tau_{alpha})] as suggested by DS data of several glass formers, the fast dynamics spectrum is singled out, allowing to determine the non-ergodicity parameter f(T). The latter shows the predicted cusp-like anomaly identifying T_c as well. Another discontinuous change of f(T) is observed at T_g. The fast dynamics spectra exhibit a crossover to ``white noise'' (T < T_c). | A systematic review of complications following selective dorsal rhizotomy in cerebral palsy Introduction | Introduction Spasticity is the root cause of the functional limitations in cerebral palsy and it can be countered by various methods. Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is a procedure in which afferent fibers are ablated near the posterior root of the spinal cord leading to reduction of efferent excitation which thereby reduces spasticity. This involves identification of the rootlets during surgery through intraoperative electrical stimulation so that only those rootlets are ablated which contribute maximally to spasticity (1).
