An Encoding for Order-Preserving MatchingEncoding data structures store enough information to answer the queries they are meant to support but not enough to recover their underlying datasets. In this paper we give the first encoding data structure for the challenging problem of order-preserving pattern matching. This problem was introduced only a few years ago but has already attracted significant attention because of its applications in data analysis. Two strings are said to be an order-preserving match if the {\em relative order} of their characters is the same: e.g., $4, 1, 3, 2$ and $10, 3, 7, 5$ are an order-preserving match. We show how, given a string $S [1..n]$ over an arbitrary alphabet and a constant $c \geq 1$, we can build an $O (n \log \log n)$-bit encoding such that later, given a pattern $P [1..m]$ with $m \leq \lg^c n$, we can return the number of order-preserving occurrences of $P$ in $S$ in $O (m)$ time. Within the same time bound we can also return the starting position of some order-preserving match for $P;20162018-06-29T17:53:27Z
Local well-posedness of Yang-Mills equations in Lorenz gauge below the energy normWe prove that the Yang-Mills equations in the Lorenz gauge (YM-LG) is locally well-posed for data below the energy norm, in particular, we can take data for the gauge potential $A$ and the associated curvature $F$ in $H^s\times H^{s-1}$ and $H^r\times H^{r-1}$ for $s=(\frac67+,-\frac1{14} +)$, respectively. This extends a recent by Selberg and the present author on the local well-posedness of YM-LG for finite energy data (specifically, for $(s, r)=(1-, 0)$). We also prove unconditional uniqueness of the energy class solution, that is, uniqueness in the classical space $C([-T, T]; X_0)$, where $X_0$ is the energy data space. The key ingredient in the proof is the fact that most bilinear terms in YM-LG contain null structure some of which uncovered in the present paper.20142018-06-30T06:35:00Z
Generation of high-purity higher-order Laguerre-Gauss beams at high laser powerWe have investigated the generation of highly pure higher-order Laguerre-Gauss (LG) beams at high laser power of order 100W, the same regime that will be used by 2nd generation gravitational wave interferometers such as Advanced LIGO. We report on the generation of a helical type LG33 mode with a purity of order 97% at a power of 83W, the highest power ever reported in literature for a higher-order LG mode.20132013-09-23T02:44:29Z
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey. VII. The intrinsic shapes of low-luminosity galaxies in the core of the Virgo cluster, and a comparison with the Local Group(Abridged) We investigate the intrinsic shapes of low-luminosity galaxies in the central 300 kpc of the Virgo cluster using deep imaging obtained as part of the NGVS. We build a sample of nearly 300 red-sequence cluster members in the yet unexplored $-14 < M_{g} < -8$ magnitude range. The observed distribution of apparent axis ratios is then fit by families of triaxial models with normally-distributed intrinsic ellipticities and triaxialities. We develop a Bayesian framework to explore the posterior distribution of the model parameters, which allows us to work directly on discrete data, and to account for individual, surface brightness-dependent axis ratio uncertainties. For this population we infer a mean intrinsic ellipticity E=0.43, and a mean triaxiality T=0.16. This implies that faint Virgo galaxies are best described as a family of thick, nearly oblate spheroids with mean intrinsic axis ratios 1:0.94:0.57. We additionally attempt a study of the intrinsic shapes of Local Group sat;20162018-06-29T09:42:21Z
Maximum Weight Independent Set in lClaw-Free Graphs in Polynomial TimeThe Maximum Weight Independent Set (MWIS) problem is a well-known NP-hard problem. For graphs $G_1, G_2$, $G_1+G_2$ denotes the disjoint union of $G_1$ and $G_2$, and for a constant $l \ge 2$, $lG$ denotes the disjoint union of $l$ copies of $G$. A {\em claw} has vertices $a,b,c,d$, and edges $ab,ac,ad$. MWIS can be solved for claw-free graphs in polynomial time; the first two polynomial time algorithms were introduced in 1980 by \cite{Minty1980,Sbihi1980}, then revisited by \cite{NakTam2001}, and recently improved by \cite{FaeOriSta2011,FaeOriSta2014}, and by \cite{NobSas2011,NobSas2015} with the best known time bound in \cite{NobSas2015}. Furthermore MWIS can be solved for the following extensions of claw-free graphs in polynomial time: fork-free graphs \cite{LozMil2008}, $K_2$+claw-free graphs \cite{LozMos2005}, and apple-free graphs \cite{BraLozMos2010,BraKleLozMos2008}. This manuscript shows that for any constant $l$, MWIS can be solved for $l$claw-free graphs in polynomial time. ;20162018-06-29T10:11:28Z
The NOG Sample: Galaxy Systems and 3D Real-Space Galaxy DensityWe discuss the 3D real-space reconstruction of the optical galaxy density field in the local Universe as derived from the galaxies of the Nearby Optical Galaxy (NOG) sample. NOG is a distance-limited (cz_{LG} < 6000 km/s) and magnitude--limited (B 20). We have replaced ``true distances'' measurements for all the objects in order to correct for redshif distortions. Using homogenized photometric information for the whole sample, NOG is meant to be an approximation to a homogeneous all-sky 3D optically selected and statistically well-controlled galaxy sample that probes in great detail volumes of cosmological interest. Our goal is to construct a reliable, robust and unbiased field of density contrasts covering interesting regions of galaxy and mass overdensities of the local universe.19992013-09-23T01:15:38Z
